10/8/02 "Eating Chips and Going Nuts"

It had been a long day! Jim was out working on a job and I was at

home with the kids. ("the kids"...wow) Anyway, after completing two

loads of laundry on and off the line, a sink-full of dishes, an

overhaul of the living room, countless nursing sessions and diaper

changes, plus other exciting homelife activities (including time

spent with Ananda), all the while hoping for the baby-in-tow to take

a nap or two (which never happened) so that I could join him, I

finally collapsed in the backyard while Ananda prepared a relaxing

sunset picnic for us. We enjoyed a delightful three-course dinner of

corn chips, corn chips, and, you guessed it...corn chips. I was

feeling pretty beat.

My daughter, on the other hand, full of her usual zest and a dose of

extra bugginess for being home all day, started driving me nuts just

as soon as we walked in the door. Everywhere I went, she followed.

She danced, she squirmed, she squealed, yook at this, yook at that,

yook at me... "AAH!" That was all I could say (and I didn't exactly

Say it) as I made my escape with the baby in my arms, for the solace

of the quiet bedroom and my favorite chair.

Of course she came in after me.

I gave her a dirty look.

To this she boldly pranced right up to the chair, perched herself with

a toe pointing right at me, and with her hands on her hips and creases

between her brows she demanded, "Are you having a bad thought...or

WHAT?!"

You...are...driving...me...CRAZY!! That was my thought and I felt

like screaming it, however taking one look at her I couldn't help but

grin because she was right! That was my bad thought, and the blessed

release in my heart that formed the grin somehow erased it. So I

didn't scream at her. Instead, I extended an open palm, told her she

was right, and asked her if we could be friends. Her body instantly

eased up as she sprang forward to put her little hand in mine. "We

already are!" she said.
