I remember seeing a news story about Jimmy Carter when he was the President.

Jimmy and an aide were in a canoe when a rabbit came swimming up to them.....

Evidently everyone considered this an abnormal event......and it appeared that

no one knew what to do........

Jimmy jumped up, took his oar and proceded to beat the hell out of the

rabbit.......

I wonder what that rabbit would think about the recent turn of events.......:-0

I don't have a Mother Theresa store......but I'll bet somebody does..:-)

Jimmy Carter and Mother Theresa are products of their conditioning.

They had no chioce in their actions....the people who give the peace prize had

no option in their decision:

I think that Mother Theresa and Jimmy Carter are jewels.............but no

brighter then the all the others.

By the same logic, your views on Jimmy Carter and Mother Theresa are

a product of your conditioning. Is your conditioning somehow rooted

in the Absolute Truth that it should be taken more seriously!? :-).

Where is the originality that this sangha is famous for. Must we

rehash old philosophies and what others have said a thousand more

times? :-).

By the way, does you story about Jimmy Carter having a negative

interaction with the rabbit have a newspaper source? Please share.

What if it turns out that the rabbit was really an alligator? What if

Jimmy saw it as such? Or maybe Jimmy knew it was a rabbit but was

trying to topple the boat. In that version of the story Jimmy is a

hero.

I don't think the totality of a person's life can be judged by an

incident with a rabbit.

Frankly, I think President Carter is a good choice for the Nobel

Peace Prize for all the work he has done since he left office.

I don't think everyone is equal in this world. If we look around

carefully, we see that everyone is not equal.

Sorry.

Actually, Mother Teresa's

worthiness as a Nobel

Laureate is imo *far* more

dubious than ex-President

Carter's, but of course

that statement may well be

a product of my own

conditioning. For

reference, part of that

conditioning is passages

from Christopher Hitchens'

book, "The Missionary

Position: Mother Teresa in

Theory and Practice."

I became an ardent admirer of Jimmy Carter during the gas shortages of the

'70s when he said the country was in a malaise and we needed to (I'm

paraphrasing here) quit whining and take some responsibility, both

individually and collectively, for the mess we're in over our dependence on

oil. He spoke the truth then and, heaven help us, he's STILL right.

Something special is going on when people speak the truth. Holly

Dear Harsha and Michael:

In the seventies I had a portrait business in Atlanta. Jimmy of

course was big news so I did a portrait of him that everyone was very

taken with.

It was just a head and collar but it was on public view in my shop at

the Omni International downtime. As I worked I could hear constant

comments about Jimmy "Who". The people of Atlanta for the most part

did not like him, especially the monied class. Many political

comments were tossed around until finally I concocted a plan use the

portrait for the greater public good. And some financial gain.

I would give the portrait to his mother who still lived in south

Georgia close to his brother Billy of beer drinking fame, a ne'er do

well. "Billy Beer". The plan was to give the portrait of Jimmy to

his mother who would put it on the wall.

The next stage involved painting a large white rabbit suit on clear

acetate that could fit over the portrait making Jimmy into a man in a

rabbit suit with large front teeth and whiskers. This covering I

would sell to Billy who would "lay in the gap" waiting for the

President of the US to come visit the mother. Before Jimmy comes in

to see the portrait, Billy would paste up the covering and wait for

The Presidential reaction.

I wasted a lot of time thinking about that but at least I was not out

paddle whipping rabbits.

Ahhhh Harsha,

Of course the beliefs espoused through this one stem from its conditioning and

are, without doubt, no closer to the Truth.

It is, however, believed that these "old philosophies" sometimes hint at "our"

true condition: and that It may, in some cases, be necessary to hear them a

million times.

It is further believed that the tendency to revere any human being based on what

is supposed to be his or her ideal behavior, only perpetuates the illusion of

separation and divides all-that-is into the good guys and bad guys.

All that is also part of all-that-is...............I,m just weary of the

structure.

The story about Jimmy was not meant to be mean-spirited.......It was shown on

the nightly news.......I'm sure that some of the members here can substantiate

it.

There is another possibility that you may not have thought of........maybe it

was a rabbit dressed in an alligator suit.

I always thought that Jimmy Carter was, and continues to be, a gentle and honest

human being.

One of the bravest thing I ever saw a politition do was when he admitted that

"Sometimes I have lust in my heart".

I'm sure that he later regretted this statement......but he endeared himself in

this heart.

Thanks Bob! What a great story, even if it did not really happen. Big

Bob, you said that despite the time you spent on this, at least you

were not out "paddle whipping rabbits" like Jimmy.

Is "paddle whipping rabbits" an actual "sport"....like hunting or

something. I am simply not aware of this stuff, so please educate me.

I mean...was Jimmy really out there whipping rabbits in the water for

some traditional fun or just defending his canoe or are you all

pulling my legs? Are there any sources for this stuff?

Thanks Bruce about the Christopher Hitchens reference. I think I have

seen CH on T.V. He has an english accent, right?

He really went after Clinton too If I recall correctly. CH is very

intense. if it is the same guy, he seems awfully angry and cynical

and probably sees fraud and corruption everywhere.

Oh, come to think of it, it is everywhere! :-). :-).

Anyway CH appeared to have a very dry and sarcastic sense of humor. I

don't hold that against him. Everyone has to get through life somehow!

Indeed.

He's an Equal Opportunity

Destroyer, a modern-day

muckraker with no

entangling political karma,

left or right -- although,

as a nominal atheist and

"ethical humanist," he's

generally seen as a

leftist, he's fiercely

independent, even from

those with whom he

generally agrees.

Demeanor aside, he builds

a very good case for

Teresa not being anything

like her public image as

a saintly old lady. With

Jimmy Carter, what you

see is who you get!

>

> Oh, come to think of it, it is everywhere! :-). :-).

Exactly right -- to

paraphrase myself, even

the ashram is the world!

Yes, a droll fellow indeed

-- but quite funny and

more often than not right

on target.

Exactly, and rightful seva

comes in myriad forms!

Bob,

I love this.....it has all the elements of puppy-play that makes life so

delicious.....

I only wish it would have come to fruition.

It seems that we have to jump on these things spontaneously......they only come

around once.......

Thanks again

Bob,

I love this.....it has all the elements of puppy-play that makes life so

delicious.....

I only wish it would have come to fruition.

It seems that we have to jump on these things spontaneously......they only come

Yep, got to go with Michael here. I got all misty eyed the other day thinking

about someone or other, about what a good person they were and what good works

they had done, what compassion they had shown, and it struck me then that, in

fact, they were doing what they were doing prompted by their own self (ie

egoistic) interest just like everyone else, except that in their case, it was

the need to be and to do 'good' that the ego required to have met, and that my

admiration of this person was really just aesthetic, a matter of taste only.

There were quite a few good Mother Theresa/Lady Di jokes going around the UK

(they died on the same day I think, but I can't remember any of them. One of

them was about sandals, anyone know that one?

Rabbits are the prey of foxes, as such they can easily

contract the rabies

that is prevalent in foxes in the south, any wild animal

exhibiting unusual daylight

behavior and or aggressive tendencies probably has the

disease and if so,

is suffering horribly, and should be dispatched as quickly

as possible. This is

common knowledge where president Carter was raised.

Hi Harsha and Michael

As a good ol' boy maself I recognize good eatin when it swims up to

the boat as quick as the next guy. Missing the window of opportunity

would be anathema to Jimma's constituency.

Here in Texas the boys have bars welded onto the front of old pickups

to stand on when they go out armadillo batting at night. (That is

true by the way).

I always thought Jimmy Carter the most ethical of presidents. I did

a drawing for Lester Maddox who lost the governor's race to JC.

Lester said that jimmy was the sneakiest person he ever met. Lester

to those who don't remember Georgia's gov. before Jimmy and was a

noted bigot. Jimmy by contrast to Lester was very very bright. JC by

the way was endorsed by none other than Rolling Stone correspondent,

Dr. Hunter S Thompson.

I don't think paddle whipping rabbits could be a sport unless the

rabbits pretty much did that sort of thing all the time. I could see

canoes full of Bubba's chasing bunnies down the Ga. waterways if

swimming were a common enough rabbitual trait but I don't think it is.

Dear TG

Great artwork. Thanks for the link.

Diana and Mother Theresa were buried the same day. The emotion was

incredible at MT's funeral.

If nothing else she inspired others to do the humble chores that have

to be done before the great "leaders" can do what they must.

She was the symbol for many people who don't speak up but do what

they must all their lives. The people who saw her funeral knew

someone important had passed.

The tribute of the painting was very heart warming. I loved it.

Hi Bobby,

Maybe it takes a bubba to understand another bubba?

Please don't tell the good ol' boys about the marsh rabbits (or swamp rabbits)

who do indeed swim. They flee to water when attacked by predators,

not expecting presidents to be around. I looked them up, and they can also walk on

their hind legs, so you can see this is a very special rabbit. They are now protected

under the endangered species act, so they must not be multiplying like bunnies.

I always liked Jimmy too, especially when he left the Southern Baptist Church.

He did it because they said women could not be pastors, and should be submissive to

their husbands. He took a lot of unpopular, but principled stands as president, and also

he was the one who set aside the huge Alaska wildlife sanctuary. He's a good guy.

Dear Grant:

It has been a while since I have encountered anything on the good

doctor. I haven't been looking though. He was very taken with Jimma

though at the time. He described how he found himself in the

vicinity when JC was giving a speech and listened. something got his

attention and he studied up on this unknown guy. He said in this

article I read i forget where, that he, Hunter S was the first

journalist (?) to endorse Jimmy.

I fear Hunter may have become paranoid or something.

Dear Gloria:

Life is cruel sometimes. I wish the best to all rabbits but they

take their chances right along with the rest of us. It is sad that

specie suffer for man's mental shortcomings.

If it was not trying to harm you then for your own peace of mind, if

you kill it you should eat it or serve it up to something that needs

it. (ethics by Bobby)

Stay well

Hunter S.,paranoid? With all those guns? Surely not!

It's true that his best years are behind him though. I remember laughing

uncontrollably at 'Fear and Loathing...' while standing at a bus stop (the bit

that goes 'wait 'til he sees the goddamn bats' I think) and getting looked at

strangely. The last of his I read (the Clinton one) definitely lacked the edge

of old. Inevitably, I suppose...
