10/29/02 "Neighbors"

It was a cool and beautiful, sunny autumn morning. Jim was working

around the house in his funny old hat, I was rocking the sleepy baby,

and our little naked girl was running around after her fluffy, white

dog. But life in utopia changed abruptly when angry shouts pierced

the air. A woman whom we had never encountered before stormed right

up to the very edge of the peaceful backyard scene and hollered at us

for cutting down a tree on her property. She was accompanied by a

large teenager who was holding the spiked (no kidding) collar of a

guard dog and the woman was telling us that she was going to call the

police and take us to court. She went on and on. She hadn't left any

room for us to say anything in response and when she had finished with

all that she came to say, she went back home. It was reminiscent of

those ladies who scream and yell at each other at full blast on TV

talkshows, and the harsh words and the tough guy with the dog and all

the threats were intended to be quite serious. Upon closer

examination, however, these points came to light:

1) They had certainly come fully armed!

2) Although the woman's claims may have appeared to her to be

true, the fact was that they weren't true at all.

3) The tough guy was really just a big boy with pimples who was

visibly bored. In fact, he had turned to leave

more than once, before his mother (?) was through.

4) I could have sworn that the ferocious dog they had brought

with them had actually been smiling at us!

5) If the police came, she might get really embarrassed.

6) The case wouldn't make it to court.

After a good, hearty laugh between us, marvelling that life had

actually expressed itself like that, Jim and I were delighted to

notice that it was still a cool and beautiful, sunny autumn morning!

(Ananda, who had been witness to everything, had looked directly to us

for how to take it. Thankfully, our honest laughter was contagious.)
