Guest guest
11/1/02 "Halloween" Last night we had the best Halloween of our whole lives. Okay. Granted, it was the first one for a couple of us, but still. For many years, Jim and I have found ourselves living in situations where Halloween just wasn't what was happening, and to be quite honest, it wasn't happening inside of us either. In fact, I hadn't celebrated it since I left my childhood home. We drove to a small village where the houses were close enough together for walking, and Ananda, dressed as a horse, galloped to each door, brimming with excitement and joy. Once she stopped and told us, "This is the bestest night in my yife." She was so excited about her candy that she was eating it and sharing it equally with us during the walks in between the houses. Even having had a "say no to junk food" campaign going on in my head for, say, ten years or so, and not having eaten Halloween candy for that long, I found myself helpless at her completely loving requests to "please try some, Mommy, you will yove it!" Daddy, who had been claiming hypogycemia and was, hence, candy-free, for about twenty-five years, also indulged. Can you can imagine the "oooohs" and "aaaahs" that came out of the three of us?! The "trick or treats" and the "thank yous" that Ananda delivered to the candy-givers at every door were joyfully fresh, heartfelt, and sincere. It was such a delight! I don't think we stopped smiling all evening. We ate candy during the drive home and we ate even more after we got there. In fact, we ate candy until bedtime, which ended up being midnight, and this morning Ananda only found a couple of loose m&ms left at the very bottom of her plastic pumpkin, and they were quickly disposed of. Before last night, Jim and I had had several talks about how to properly manage the Halloween candy situation. Truthfully, we had never had any in the house before. Little did we imagine that it would have been taken care of in such a fashion! I wondered about my high-octane breastmilk for Baby Zack, but he's been fine and woke up this morning with smiles again. It was a thoroughly joyful experience. I don't think I could ever eat another bite of candy again! Well....okay. Maybe next year I will. No path goes nowhere. Paths, places, sights, perceptions, and indeed all experiences arise from and exist in and subside back into the Space of Awareness. Like waves rising are not different than the ocean, all things arising from Awareness are of the nature of Awareness. Awareness does not come and go but is always Present. It is Home. Home is where the Heart Is. Jnanis know the Heart to be the Finality of Eternal Being. A true devotee relishes in the Truth of Self-Knowledge, spontaneously arising from within into It Self. Guest guest
Dear Alan, How could you KNOW how much I would love that picture?! I've already printed it out and am now going to hunt for the perfect place to put it. Thank you for a most unexpected and loving gift.
