Guest guest
11/17/02 "Visitors" My mother called up yesterday. It was the first time I'd spoken to her since before the baby came and something really strange happened! When she said she was coming to visit us in four days, I started to behave like a frightened child. My mind went into a scramble and I heard my voice get higher as I stuttered silly things about getting the house clean. The plan somehow got made and then we hung up. When Jim came in, I was just sitting and staring blankly into space. I had previously been composing letters, telling my mother boldly how I didn't want her to come and why and after about the tenth one, I gave up. "You don't care whether she shows up or not, do you?" I asked. Jim shook his head. "I have an idea," I offered, "I will go somewhere and You can be here for her." "Then I won't be here either," he replied. We chuckled about what a class act it would be if none of us were here at the appointed hour and then it was quiet. With arms and hands spread wide, Jim broke the silence with an enthusiastic "Bring it on!" I nodded and uttered a hushed, but firm "okay," and then I stepped gratefully inside of his embrace.
