Guest guest
"Bhagavan had such a high opinion of the Ribhu Gita that he told several of us to read it regularly as part of our sadhana. He even said that constant reading of this book leads to samadhi. [Living By The Words of Bhagavan, by David Godman,p.114-5] The central teaching of the Ribhu Gita (Six Verses selected by Sri Ramana Maharshi): 1. The concept "I-am-the-body" is the sentient inner organ, the mind. It is also the illusive bondage to identification with birth and death. It is the source of all groundless fears. If there is no trace of it at all everything will be found to be the Reality of the Supreme Asbolute Being. 2. The concept "I-am-the-body" is the primal ignorance. It is known as the firm knot of the heart. It gives rise to the concepts of existence and non-existence. If there is no trace of it at all, everything will be found to be the Reality of the Supreme Asbolute Being. 3. The ego or separate soul is a concept. God, the world, the mind, desires, action, sorrow and all other things are all concepts. 4. Abiding without concepts is the undifferentiated state. It is inherence in the Supreme Being. It is wisdom. It is Liberation. It is the natural and true state. It is the Reality of the Supreme Absolute Being. It is the Supreme Formless God. If there is no concept at all everything will be found to be the Reality of the Supreme Asbolute Being. 5.The body and the various functions of manifest existence are only concepts. Hearing, reasoning and contemplating are concepts. Enquiry into the ultimate nature of one's own existence is a concept. All other things are also concepts. Concepts give rise to the world, the separate souls, and God. There is nothing whatever except concepts. Everything is in truth the Reality of the Supreme Asbolute Being. 6.The mind is unreal. It is like a magic show. It is like the son of a barren woman. It is absolutely non-existent. Since there is no mind, there are no concepts, no Master, no disciple, no world, no separate soul. All concepts are really the Reality of the Supreme Asbolute Being.

Guest guest
Dear Alton and Group, Marvelous English translations of Ribhu Gita are available from SAT (www.satramana.org). There are two translations, "Ribhu Gita" translated from the Sanskrit, and "Song of Ribhu" translated from the Tamil. Here are a a couple of verses from "Ribhu Gita" Chapter 23 2. There is no difference, duality, or pairs of opposites. There is nothing different or devoid of idfferences. Al thin, indeed, is the Supreme Brahman, unaffected by desire or anger. It is to be reached by Knowledge. 3. There is never anything as "I." There is nothing else. There is nothing decayless and no "highest of the high." All this, indeed, is the unaffected Supreme Brahman. It is to be reached by Knowledge. We are Not two, Richard RamanaMaharshi, "THE \"SELF\"" <leenalton@h...> wrote: > > "Bhagavan had such a high opinion of the Ribhu Gita that he told several of us to read it regularly as part of our sadhana. Guest guest
For those who are interested the book is available from several source, one of which is the Vedanta Society. Be aware.... there are two translations: one from the Sanskrit and one from the Tamil. The Tamil translation to English is the preferred translation as that is the one Bhagwan used. The texts are not the same and trying to find agreement in the passages is difficult. I have the Sanskrit to English translation and it is quite intense as is the Tamil. They amount to the same thing but they don't match. Reading it straight through is a mind warp. It is filled with paradox and apparant contradiction. It is mostly written in the absolute, but occasionally shifts into the relative which can cause confusion to one not used to that style. It is not a book for the beginner. Having said that ... it is very rich and worth mining for its treasures and insights. My recommendation is to avoid analyzing it and deal with it as it is. It is almost a chant, one long mantra, even in the English and is apparently highly repetitious. Don't be misled. The apparent repetitions have subtle shifts of meaning and depth. I have found that one must ride the text like a surfer rides a wave -- just go with the flow. And read it in the light of the six lines of the summary just given. I would be interested in anyone else's experience with it.
