Guest guest
The Divine Science of Yantra Yoga is a spiritual exploration through mathematics. Yantra represents a trans-cultural tool based upon a pan-cultural phenomenon - mathematics, the universally acknowledged "Queen of Sciences". To appreciate that numbers are a key to personal evolution, we can begin with the Western tradition: "numbers are the essence of all things", a saying attributed to Pythagoras. A statement promulgated by the Theosophical Society is "all is vibration'', which is a paraphrase of the Pythagorean statement. When we say "Number is the essence of all things" or "All is vibration" we are really stating what is now acknowledged as a scientific fact. The material world of Prakrit ultimately consists of number, whether we want to talk about the Element Number, the Atomic Number, the Atomic Weight, the Speed of Light the Speed of Sound or any of the other "constants" upon which modern physics is built. Emerging from the metrics of Indian civilisation is the framework for our modern mathematics. Hindu contributions include not only the Hindu Arabic Numerals Notation system but also the decimal point, zero sign, Quadratic equations and the concept of Infinity and Eternity To understand that there is a hidden, esoteric aspect to numbers we can start with the Greek and Latin roots of some common terms. Consider these facts. Mathematics - the Greek root means "to learn", What is there to learn? I would phrase it in another Greek motto "Man Know Thy Self"! (This is written over the entrance to the Oracle of Delphi). Arithmetic - from the Latin "Art of Measuring". Arithmetic came from the earlier Sanskrit root ARTHA, i.e. that aspect of life dealing with the acquisition and accounting of physical realities. What is really worth measuring? Yantra teaches us that it is worth while to measure the cycles of our personal lives! Geometry – "Earth measure". The spiritual principle of Yantra indicates that the man of the earth (Adam) is the real subject of Geometry. Geometry, in an inner life sense, is about measuring oneself, for the human comes forth from the humus and "Man is truly an earth creature". Algebra - An Arabic word signifying "the reuniting of broken parts". It reveals the real Yoga inherent in finding "X". Esoteric Algebra is about "KOHAM", the Zen Ko= an, "Who Am I?" Mother India gave birth to her son Yoga and Yoga progenerated three children (termed the three great mystic sciences of the East). -- MANTRA -- -- YANTRA -- -- TANTRA -- Mantra from the Sanskrit prefix "MAN" (mind) and the suffix "TRA" (tool) is literally the science of using sound vibration, audible and inaudible, to bring about the physical, psychological and psychic changes. Our Guru often used to refer to Mantra as a "psychic elevator'" that changes levels of consciousness. Yantra is also a "tool" or more accurately an "instrument" that allows us to visualise a "magical diagram". Tantra is the 'tool' for dealing with solid physical world as manifested by and experienced though the physical body"). <http://www.yogamagik.com/yogamagik/yantra/> Unlike the visualization of the deity in representational form - Sri Yantra is a non-representational geometric form. This is available through a visual literature, transmitted by initiates as a gateway to the levels of inner experience, which are 'milked' through contemplation of the Yantra. It must always be remembered that this operation is within the larger field of psycho-spiritual experiential operations known as 'sadhana'. As Ajit Mookerjee writes: "The diagrams represent successive stages of visual realization. Read in the order shown they illustrate the process of expanding creation, from the centre dot and first downward pointing triangle at the centre to the outermost ring of lotus petals." "Read in the reverse order they symbolize the yogic process of withdrawal and focus of the power expended in creation and return to the One. Each circuit of triangles is generated by interlocking male (upward pointing) and female (downward pointing triangles." As in all organic processes, here we have to pay careful attention to the sequence. The dot in the centre of the yantra expands into ful geometrical form - like the bindu transforming into the Deity. The reverse process is also identical in visualization. The outer form of the deity is condensed into the inner, most nucelar form, which is the BINDU (Dot) in visual terms, and the Bija (seed-syllable) in audio, sound form. These are compact, condensed - nucelar storage centres. "Every divine form possesses a bija mantra or nuclear syllable. Even in its form as the smallest sound unit, the bija remains a microcosm and thus may represent the essential form of the divinity." http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/george/yantra.htm -----K
