Guest guest
3/13/03 "Big as All the Stars" Ananda and I haven't been all that close lately. Between the baby, her new school and social life and my emotional volatility with the added tendency to hermit myself, we have not been very available to each other. I was beginning to wonder if this might be a bad thing. She has become awfully stubborn and outspoken and she's so darned bright, the girl can argue like you wouldn't believe. Half the time I do have with her is spent bickering like sisters. It seems as if we are only quiet together for short periods when the baby is asleep and we are looking for Waldo. But then tonight my doubts dissolved. I was in the darkened bedroom nursing Zacky to sleep (he makes the sweetest baby sighs when he swallows). Ananda, still damp and soft from her bath, slid in on the tiny edge of the bed at my back. "What're you doing here?" I whispered. "I wanted to be with you for a little while," she answered. I reached my arm back and she squeezed it to her body. Together we listened to the baby breathe and swallow and sigh. "I love you, Ananda," I whispered. "I love you, too," she answered. For a few moments we listened again and then she said, "Mommy?" and I said, "Hmm?" and she said, "I love you big as All the stars." And that's when I knew everything was gonna be okay.
