Guest guest
Each day, in the morning and when I come home from work, the first thing I do is go out to the porch to check on my new guests. Each day, they look just a little bit different, a little hair here, a tuft there, a bigger head, an open eye, until they are scrunched together in the nest, all dark and feathery, pulsating together quietly as they stare at me. Meanwhile, Momma and Poppa are hanging out on the roof of the old shed nearby, worms hanging out of their mouths as they wait for me to get out of there. I oblige :-) But not until I catch a quick one of Mom feeding them... I wonder how long before they will fly away. I think back to last year and how the birds in the nest on the spotlights near the roof disappeared one day and I never saw them there again. It is day 7now. I am a little late getting out of the house, but I want to get a few more photos of them before I run out the door. They are awake, staring at me with their black eyes. They are really scrunched into the nest now, almost on top of one another, a tail sticking out the back of the nest, a beak sticking up into the air. I take my photos, my last photos. When I come home that afternoon, I will discover that they have learned to fly all in the span of an afternoon and are gone from the nest.
