Muhurta is the selection of the best date and time for performing any work. It helps in concentrating the energy of the planets and other astrological factors in an auspicious way so as to nullify the evil influences and make the result of the work performed most fruitful. It helps in counteracting the obstructions provided by the birth chart of a person and to neutralize or overcome the loss mentioned therein. It synchronizes the energy of the person, the stars and the event itself so as to make it utmost advantageous to the person performing the work. So, whenever you are going in for some important consideration of your life, which either takes a significant amount of your time and energy or is going to make its impact on your life for quite sometime, then you should perform that action in accordance to the Muhurta, so that it can be of utmost advantage to you and you can lead a much better, happier, satisfactory and gratified life. In astrology, the starting time of an event is taken for the calculation of the horoscope and making the interpretations. So, the starting or the beginning time is the most important factor. The future and the life events of a person depend on what time he was born. But, the irony is that it is not under the control of the person as to at what time he wants to be born. But the other things that he performs in his lifetime are under his control. He can choose the time of his performing any work. And that is what Muhurta is. If the beginning time of the work is auspicious, then the result of the action will be very fruitful and as desired. http://www.sirindia.com/astrology/muhurata.htm These are excerpts below: The Guru What is a 'Guru'? The true meaning of 'Guru' is pure and simple. In Sanskrit, "gu" means darkness, and "ru" means one who removes. Therefore, a "guru" is one who removes your darkness, however it is not merely the darkness of ignorance. It is not simply that we go to our guru with a question, ask him, he answers it and then our confusion is cleared. Rather, the mere presence of the guru in our life removes all darkness, anger, pain and confusion. The Guru resides within us in the form of our highest ideals, until we come in contact with that Guru within, a Guru in physical form symbolises the Guru inside. We can say that a Guru is the outer embodiment of the inner. The Guru in physical form becomes like an altar where we rest our love, attention and trust. As love, respect and trust for our Guru arise, we get a taste of these qualities within, and as they begin to flow, we become aware of their presence. This process brings us closer to our own true nature, the Self, the Divine. The Festival A festival with a truly spiritual meaning and relevance, Guru Purnima celebrates the might of one's teacher or guru through respect and reverence. Purnima refers to the full moon, since the full moon symbolizes the mind with delight. Guru Purnima signifies the elimination of all darkness and evil from the mind. It is also known as 'Vyasa Purnima.' The festival is celebrated in July/August on the full moon of the fourth month (Ashada) of the Indian calendar. It is believed that the great scholar Vyasa, who lived in the Dwapara Yuga, was born on this day. Legend has it that this is when he completed the codification of the four Vedas or the Hindu religious texts. Guru Purnima is an occasion for cleansing the mind to make it absolutely pure with love. Guru Purnima is a day of renewing our faith, our 'Shraddha' (faith), in He who bestows the light upon our lives. It is a day of re-opening our hearts; our souls and our lives to His divine presence and letting it penetrate and saturate every aspect of our being. There is a beautiful story told about a man who wanted to walk on water. He begged his guru to give him a secret mantra or a special boon so he could complete this remarkable feat. The man was extremely pious and devoted, and he had been in his guru's service for many years. Therefore, the guru gave him a leaf, folded many times until it was very small. He told his disciple, "Within this leaf is a secret formula which will enable you to walk on water. However, you must not open it because the formula inside is a secret." So the man agreed, and he takes the folded leaf carefully in his hands and begins his journey across the river. He is walking fine when suddenly he is overcome by curiosity. What could be this secret formula? Is there really a secret inside? Is it a powder or a stone or some holy mantra printed? Where did his guru get it? His doubts get the best of him and he begins slowly to open the leaf as he walks, careful lest any of the secret formula should spill out into the water. As soon as he unfolds the last piece to unveil the secret, he suddenly sinks into the water and drowns. Inside the leaf was written the simple word, "faith." Whenever bad qualities like anger and jealousy crop up in you, do not be carried away by them. Control them. Keep telling yourself, "Anger is a bad quality. It will lead to bad actions and ultimately put me to ruin." Whenever you are angry, sit quietly in one place and drink cold water. Chant the Divine Name. Then your anger will gradually subside. If your anger persists, go to a place of solitude and walk briskly for half a mile. Thus, there are many easy paths to control one's anger. But the youth today are not making any effort to control their anger. Whenever they get angry, they take it as an opportunity to hurl abuses at others. It is the worst sin. Through prayer and contemplation on God, you should try to control the evil qualities in you. (Divine Discourse: 5th July 2001) ......Today is full moon day. The Veda says: Chandrama Manaso Jathaha Chaksho Suryo Ajayatha Mukhadindrascha Agnishcha. Moon is the presiding deity of the mind. That day is Purnima in the true sense of the term, when the mind is filled with pure love. Let your mind shine brilliantly like the moon on a full moon day. This is possible only when you fill your mind with love. Fill your hearts with love. There is no wealth, no Dharma, no meditation greater than love. I expect all of you to live in unity like brothers and sisters. If you become the embodiment of love, you will become divine. (Divine Discourse: 20th July 1999) Guru Purnima means full moon without any defect or lacuna. Moon is nothing but mind. When the mind is completely perfect, it sheds light. Guru Purnima is not performed by circumambulation and offerings to the Guru. What is the real offering? It is the offering of one's love. To know that God exists everywhere is circumambulation. If you understand these terms, everyday is Guru Purnima. There is only one Guru, that is God and there is no other Guru. Contemplate on that Guru.
