Guest guest
The following is from "Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi" 18th December, 1936: Mr Cohen asked: “Meditation is with mind in the waking (jagrat) state. There is mind in dream also. Why is there no meditation in dream? Nor is it possible?” Sri Bhagavan: “Ask it in the dream.” After a short silence Sri Ramana continued: “You are told to meditate now and find who you are. Instead of doing it you ask ‘Why is there no meditation in dream or in sleep?’ If you find out for whom there is waking (jagrat), it will be clear that dream and sleep are also for the same one. You are the witness of waking (jagrat), dream (svapna) and sleep (sushupti) – rather, they pass before you. Because you are out of meditation now, these questions arise. Stick to meditation and see if these questions arise.” The portions of the above quote that I would like to call attention to are: “You are told to meditate now and find who you are. Instead of doing it you" Instead of doing it you_______________ We could fill in the blank with so many thousands of activities. It need not be limited to questions we ask. It may be statements we make. Thoughts we have be they on spiritual topics or not. Even though Mr. Cohen's question was on a spiritual topic, Sri Ramana pointed out that such discussions are not what he had been told to do. What he had been told to do was to: "Meditate now and find out who you are". Instead of doing it you______________ we could fill in the blank with every activity that we pursue that is not: "Meditate now and find who you are". The ego is so tricky. It is a great tribute to the ego's sucess at preserving its imaginary identity that there is so little written on the subject of the ego's preservations strategies, the methods and tricks the ego uses to preserve its imaginary self. Sri Ramana very openly and honestly communicated to Mr. Cohen that although his question was on a spiritual topic, it was indeed just an ego preservation strategy. To be asking spiritual questions on spiriutual topics, when the instruction that had been given, repeatedly every day, although phrased in different words on different days, was: "Meditate now and find who you are" If the ego were not so tricky, this pointing out: “You are told to meditate now and find who you are. Instead of doing it you ask ‘Why is there no meditation in dream or in sleep?’” would be enough. However, Sri Ramana knows how tricky the ego is and therefore continues the instruction: "Because you are out of meditation now, these questions arise. Stick to meditation and see if these questions arise.” The application can be made to far more than just questions. Because you are out of meditation now__________ arise. The blank can be filled in with every thought, every action, every unnecessary activity a human engages in. The blank can be filled in with thousands of strategies the ego uses to preserve its imaginary self. The same with the final sentence: Stick to meditation and see if ________ arise. We need not be limited to questions when we fill in that blank. We can fill in that blank with every thought we think, with every entertainment we pursure, with every unnecessary activitity, with the thousands or millions of strategies the ego has to preserve its imaginary self. It may be that what is needed is not to go on reading thousands of Sri Ramana's words, instead, it might be more beneficial to fully understand, to fully penetrate, to fully allow in without the ego's distortion, a few of Sri Ramana's sentences. Here are a few sentences spoken by Sri Ramana worth contemplating: “You are told to meditate now and find who you are. Instead of doing it you..." "Because you are out of meditation now, these questions arise. Stick to meditation and see if these questions arise.” Because you are out of meditation now__________" Stick to meditation and see________" Take care, with Love, Michael L. http://uarelove1.tripod.com/STD8.htm The New with improved product search
