Guest guest
Satipatthana/ Meditation Hi Kh, Kh: I guess what I like about getting seriously into examioning the Buddhi= st meditation through the Nikayas only is that truly originally this was a s= cience and that is what has intrigued me so much over the past three years. = it keeps me going back to observe again and again. It keeps the energy level= of my practice way up because it is so very interesting...... How do you feel about this, J? J: I agree. But I think insight practice is a bit off-topic on this list. = Where is that other list you are on located? With Metta, J ------- Me too. They seem to get bogged down in the experiences of thevJhanas and a= llowing themselves to flow on down the path and the rest of the practice. I do not understand this fixation with Jhana and the pretense that it is so= me kind of individual practice, do you? I feel it was meant to be like a flowing river with Tranquility meditation = and the insight parts happening simultaneously from the beginning on through= the Jhanas and the Arupa Jhanas.......... there is a great deal of indicati= on that this was the object here. what is your take on this? Kh ------ Kh: What is this? I agree Jhana (infused contemplation?) and Insight (Vipassana) are meant to go hand in hand as per the instructions of The Buddha given to those who are on the path. If there is any "getting bogged down" in Jhana, then that Jhana is not a factor of the path at all probably, because the Jhana of the path is samma, leading onward, not wrong but right. That said, sammasamadhi is told as the apex of the path, and all other seven of the eightfold path are told as its attendant factors. If you think of it as a pyramid with sammaditthi as the first layer of bricks (the foundation) and sammasamadhi as the topmost brick. Now imagine that there is an inverted pyramid above the first, representing nibbana. One can see the apex from the bottom, at sammaditthi, but the only point of contact between the two pyramids is sammasamadhi. This is the "apex mentis" (the minds highest point). It may be important to note that vipassana always occurs together with samatha (like a pair of messengers) as a reminder, but to one who is "getting bogged down" in jhana, they need moreso to be instructed that they are not yet on the path at all in the first place. For one who is perfecting sammasamadhi, that is not getting bogged down, don't you think? http://www.watpa.iirt.net/document/t-meditation.html repost
