Guest guest
Dear Friends: Hope you are all well. Thank you for the many kind wishes. Last Sunday, I saw my father. He was lying unconscious with many tubes coming out of his body and mouth and was on a ventilator. Some people had suggested that he may not wake up and might be on a ventilator, unable to breathe on his own. That made me furious and I experienced many emotions and had a meeting with the doctors and nurses and told them to take him off the strong sedatives so that he could experience his physical and emotional pain. I was respectful of the doctors and nurses yet passionate and aggressive with my suggestions and advice and told them that his waking was now more critical than anything else. That is a brief summary. There are many details and stories. I sat with my father on Sunday and Monday and uttered the names of God and prayed and chanted some of his favorite mantras including Gayatri and the healing Siva Mantra (Om Traymbak....). Early Tuesday morning, around 5:30am on the sixth day of his heart surgery, I told my mother and brother to get ready quickly. Upon reaching the hospital, I said to my father that it was time to get up now. Again and again, I said, get up now. Everything is fine. By grace of God, my father opened his eyes with a look of recognition. His left side was paralyzed. He could move his right leg and arm slightly but not the left leg and arm. The catscans determined that he had had a stroke during or after the heart surgery. I told my father that everything was perfect and fine. I repeated again and again to him, everything is perfect and he was going to be just fine. It took him some days to become fully coherent. The ventilator tube was taken out. My father was able to whisper but his words could not be understood. He asked for water but could not swallow due to the stroke. I wetted his tongue periodically with sponge and talked to him. He could not talk much could listen. He was very frustrated and at times angry as well. His suffering was horrific. He pleaded to be able to go to the bathroom not realizing that the attached tubes were doing the job for him. I had to explain to him the situation he was in many times. I asked my father to do Math calculations and algebra problems (my father is a retired math professor) and spell words. He did all of them well. I asked him to spell the word school. He slowly said s-c-h-o-o-l. Then he laughed slightly at the fact that I was testing him. When I left my father, he still had many tubes in his chest and a feeding tube in his nose. He was still in the ICU, but was breathing on his own and was better than before. He was speaking in both English and Punjabi and could be understood. He got back some movement on his left side. My father realized clearly what was happening. I told him how grateful and thankful I was to be able to serve him and that I would be back very soon. He raised his right hand and blessed me. My father is still in a serious condition but improving. He is expected to be in the hospital for another two weeks or so and then will go into physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation. My mother and brother are with him now. Love to all Harsha "Love itself is the actual form of God." Ramana Maharshi
Guest guest
Dear Harsha, I have a vision through your words of a man who is more than his body, a man who is strong and powerful no matter what the appearances are. There is also a strong bond between the two of you that is more than Father and Son. It is in that bond that healing is happening. The body is merely the effect of the bond which is Love. Love is a dynamic which makes all things whole, it is more than emotion, it is life itself. The words don't much matter, but the intentions of the heart, that is all that matters and it is blessing him. And you have our blessings as well, Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.
