Oh my gosh. For the last two days I have been drifting in and out of

my sanity like it was a common room in our house! I have definitely

had more than my share of moments where I did not know what was true

and what was not. It all seemed to hit early yesterday when I was at

home the entire day with the kids and there was nothing in particular

that needed my attention. It was as if all of my energy got wrapped

up in a big knot of itself. Finally, tonight in the kitchen, it

reached an extreme.

"I feel like I'm going to blow up!" I cried. Jim calmly responded,

"That's just a thought." "But I could just Scream!" "That's only

another thought," he said again. "I'm about ready to bolt out the

door and take off down the road..." "Just be here with this and

don't move," he'd say. I sat down on the floor right where I had

been standing and put my face in my hands. To my surprise, before I

knew it I was yawning. I yawned again. "I'm hungry" was my next

sentence.

We heard gallops in the hall, and shortly Ananda appeared in the

kitchen. "I'm hungwy too," she said. "Looks like we all are," Jim

stated, putting his hands on his hips. We remained there a while

going through the fridge and cabinets in our minds but none of us was

even remotely interested in what we saw. "Well, there's only one

thing we can do," I announced, breaking the silence, "Dong!" That

got cheers from Ananda, and even though it was late and we had to get

everybody dressed, and even though there was a bit of driving ahead of

us, we made a pilgrimage to one of our favorite holy places where the

folks dare to think outside the bun.

At some point during the car ride to town, Ananda complained she was

bored. Jim didn't reply right away but spontaneously what came out

of my mouth was, "So this is what love looks like when it's bored."

We were all quiet after that, and do you know? Ananda never uttered

another word about it. That's when I took notice that the crazy

waves must have finally passed on through.

When we walked into Taco Bell good and hungry, you would have thought

we'd made it to the Promised Land. Adding to our thrill was having

Elton John take our order! (Well, at least this friendly lady looked

just like him.) We had a blast, munching and crunching and sharing

all of our goodies, and each of us saved some scraps for Bo. I

looked around me at the mellow night crew assembling their tacos, at

a couple of teenagers who were laughing and enjoying hanging out with

one another, at the bright red and purple neon sign in the dark window

beside me, and at my happy kids who were completely excited just to be

there. My gaze stopped when it met Jim's tranquil eyes, and that's

where time stopped, too: a sacred moment smack in the middle of a

fast food joint, and it wasn't our first. When we were all finished,

we crumpled up our wrappers, dumped our trays, and then, with a smile

and a wave, we bid "Elton John" goodnight.
