One day a lay man was able to meet God and he said that I heard

something about a devotee and I am going to tell You. "Hold on a

minute," God replied. "Beforetelling me anything I'd like you to

pass a littletest. It's called the Triple Filter Test.""Triple

filter? That's right," God continued."Before you talk to me about

my devotee, it might be agood idea to take a moment and filter what

you'regoing to say. That's why I call it the triple filtertest. The

first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutelysure that what you are

about to tell me is true? No," the man said, "actually I just heard

about itand...""All right," said God "So you don't really knowif it's

true or not.Now let's try the second filter, the filter ofGoodness.

Is what you are about to tell me about myfriend something good?""No,

on the contrary...""So," God continued, "you want to tell mesomething

bad about him, but you're not certain it's true. You may still pass

the test though, becausethere's one filter left: the filter of

Usefulness. Iswhat you want to tell me about my friend going to

beuseful to me?No, not really.""Well," concluded God, "if what

you want to tellme is neither true nor good nor even useful, why

tellit to me at all?"This is why God is affectionate and held

allHis devotees in such high esteem.

One day a devotee pointed out to Sri Bhagavan that someone in the hall

was sleeping. The devotee added that he has been watching that person

sleep this way for the past few days. Sri Bhagavan looked at the

devotee and said. "That person is taking care of the purpose for

which he came. How about you? Why have you come here?"

(from Ch. 19)
