Guest guest
1/5/03 Her dad tells the most fantastic made-up stories, but last night it was my turn to tuck her in and she asked me for a true one. You might have thought I was describing another planet, as I shared with her one of my favorite childhood memories while growing up in a big neighborhood that had lawns and sidewalks and houses that all looked alike. "And there were no mountain lions, so all the children could play outside at night." "Wow," she said. She could hardly believe it. "We used to play Hide 'n Tag for hours. We'd creep up into trees and under bushes or sit on fences until the one who was "it" found us and then we would run and run as fast as we could. When I ran, I used to scream and laugh so hard! And then the lightning bugs would come out and sometimes we would collect them in a paper cup and then let them go." Ananda's attention was rapt. When I was through, she was silent for a bit taking it in, and then she said, "I would like to see a lightning bug sometime." "Well," I told her, "I would love to show you one. Someday we'll have to take a trip to where the lightning bugs are." "Okay," she said, rolling onto her side and snuggling down into the pillow. I pulled the sheet and blanket up over her bare shoulder and then gave her a kiss goodnight.
