Sri Ramana's Grace

When this body was in its teens in Las Vegas Nevada

in the 1970’s, my interest and attention was on the

teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi. I had not met

anyone in Las Vegas who had even heard of

Sri Ramana Maharshi.

One day I was on my way home driving on

Las Vegas Blvd. (the Las Vegas Strip) and I saw an

elderly Indian couple waving at me,

obviously wanting me to stop.

I stopped and they told me

they wanted to go to the airport.

So I drove them to the airport.

At that time I had a personalized Nevada License Plate

on my car that said “RAMANA”.

I asked them is the reason that you waved at me

to stop because you saw my “RAMANA” license plate?

The wife told me “No, we did not see your Ramana

license plate. We thought you were a taxi.

If we had known you were not a taxi,

we would not have accepted the ride.”

The husband told me he had met Sri Ramana Maharshi

when he was a young man.

He had some doubts and he told them to Sri Ramana,

and Sri Ramana cleared his doubts.

The wife looked surprised.

Even she did not know that her husband

had gone to see Sri Ramana Maharshi when he was young.

So there is an example both of Sri Ramana’s grace

and a miraculous event.

I had not even met someone who had heard of Sri Ramana

and now I was talking to someone

who had actually met Sri Ramana.

If the setting had been India in the 1970’s that may

not have been that surprising to have met someone who

had spoken with Sri Ramana.

However, this was Las Vegas, Nevada - USA.

A city known for Casino’s, not spirituality.

The place where the couple waved me down was vacant

land back in the 1970’s. Now on that same land there

is a famous hotel called the Luxor that is shaped like

a pyramid and they have a huge replica – statue of the

sphinx very near where I picked that couple up.

The miraculous part of this event was not only meeting

someone who had met Sri Ramana. The big question is

what made that Indian couple wave at me to stop?

The wife said, if we had known you were not a taxi,

we would not have accepted the ride.

The car I was driving was a Ford LTD.

The Ford LTD was a huge rectangular shaped car with

very square edges.

My car was dark brown, a similar color to chocolate.

My huge car did not look anything like an American

taxi or an Indian taxi.

Therefore, what made that couple see a taxi?

The wife said they would not have accepted the ride if

they had known I was not a taxi. What made them see a

taxi in a car that looks nothing like a taxi

and that was not a taxi?

Thus through Sri Ramana’s grace I was able to meet

someone who had met and spoken with Sri Ramana,

right there in Las Vegas. You can imagine how

thrilling that was for a young man whose attention was

so focused on the teachings of Sri Ramana.

The couple wanted to pay me for the ride.

I would not accept any money.

They had already paid me a fortune

by allowing me to meet someone

who had actually met Sri Ramana.

You can see a photo of the front of that car

with the Ramana license plate at this link:

Thank you for sharing these stories Michael and Joyce and Mazie and

others.

Perhaps in the next issue of the HS Mag, we can publish all these

beautiful writings.

Michael, your taxi story brought tears to my eyes. Sri Ramana stories

usually do that.

Dearest Michael,

I so enjoyed and thrilled in a peaceful thrill of silent calm, that I

went ahead and aded pictures to your story for more of Sri Ramana's

physical Glory and Grace by Glance. Wonderful relating and I am

grateful, DearOne. Your story again with The Friend in Image-Mode

that can bode a Bhava-breaking breakthrough...

Dear Michael B.:

Thank you for pointing that out.

Sometimes I forget that on my Tripod web site,

I can link directly to files, but not directly to pictures.

I think this new link will work.

There are three photos there:

Dear Mazie:

I really enjoyed the photo presentation.

I liked the Sri Ramana smile photo.

You found the right hotel with the sphinx,

and even a taxi advertising the Luxor.

It is interesting that you put a picture of Papaji

with flames there.

That brings something to mind.

On the day when they carried Papaji's body down the street

there were buses and trucks and cars, etc.

I was walking on foot and the buses and trucks and cars

had gone ahead to take Papaji's body to the river.

I approached an autorickshaw driver

to ask him about taking me to the place.

He quoted a price that was maybe ten times the normal price.

I was surprised because just a few minutes ago

that autorickshaw driver had witnessed the sages body

being carried down the street,

and I thought that he would show some respect on that day.

My thought was:

on this day, the day they are taking Papaji's body to the river,

I am not going to be cheated.

I decided I would walk back to Baba house,

the guest house where I was staying,

next to the place where Papaji used to have satsang,

and just forget about going to the river.

I took only a few steps after having that thought

and a man in a motorcycle drove up

and asked me if I would like to go to the place

where they were taking Papaji's body.

I told him yes.

He then pointed to a white mini van that was coming towards us

and he said that is Papaji's___________

I don't remember what relative he named,

maybe son or grandson or nephew.

He said he will take you there.

So I climbed into the white mini van

and Papaji's relative and I, just the two of us in the mini van,

went to the place where they had taken Papaji's body.

The guest house was only around a 5 minute walk from the place I was

when I had that thought, therefore, the timing was perfect,

because if the man had driven by just a few minutes later,

I would already have been in the guest house.

Two hours after they lit the fire, Papaji's body was unchanged.

It had not been burnt by the fire. It looked just the same.

Papaji used to like to joke a lot,

and this seemed like his last joke, that his body would not burn.

I left after three or four hours and

Papaji's body still looked basically the same.

So the picture you posted

where Papaji's body is untouched by the flame reminded me of that.

Also, you put these words on top of the photo of Papaji:

"The couple wanted to pay me for the ride.

I would not accept any money.

They had already paid me a fortune

by allowing me to meet someone

who had actually met Sri Ramana."

Those words were quite appropriate for the photo of Papaji,

because I only remember meeting five people

who had met Sri Ramana when Sri Ramana's body was alive:

That elderly man in the taxi story,

Sri Poonjaji,

Sri V. Ganesan,

Sri Tinnai Swami

and Sri Lakshmana Swami.

Take care,

with Love,

Michael L.
