Your posting was particularly difficult because our

spiritually arrogant mind tells us that the nondual

understanding is supposed to give us freedom from

suffering. this is the ultimate test. after all the

superstar gurus seem to be so "free." who wants to be

an intelligent failure in the enlightenment game? i

noticed you're fond of osho. it's not a secret that

he was on certain meds. perhaps the enduring

dishonesty of the eastern tradition is that they don't

tell us that some of the enlightened masters could

have been abiding in depression part of the time and

that this is not a failure but "being human."

Although Hur was not writing to me, I responded as

below:

Dear Hur,

Terms such as depression, etc., are modern terms.

Prozac and other meds are relatively recent, I

believe.

You may be interested in knowing that Sri Ramana did

once equate Self-Realization with madness. The Sage of

Arunachala stated that the difference between a Jnani

and a madman is that the Jnani does not resist his

madness! :-). So yes, the great sages are crazy, and

they really like it! :-). :-). :-).

Dan wrote a brilliant piece on HS on certain gurus

like Osho, Krishnamurti, Adi Da who have emphasized

their specialness. It was quite clear, funny, and

insightful, I thought.

I wish you well Hur. Ultimately, it seems to me that

whether the eastern tradition or the western tradition

or the gurus are dishonest or on prozac or valium or

whatever is not relevant. What is relevant is our own

honesty with knowing where we are and not being

distracted.

Lots of love

Harsha
