Guest guest
Namaste, Until I got into Vedanta, going to India etc, I probably would have agreed with the programme that Jesus was essentially some kind of rabble rousing rebel. Why they would need peaceful Jesus when they had hordes of perfectly good rebels in the form of Zealots, I don't know. However after becoming a Vedantist I believe that I really found out who Jesus was and what he was. In anticipation of Gibson's Gospel Film of the Passion, NBC aired 'Who was Jesus' piece. Well talking of Western Superficiality, they trotted out 'experts', in Israel who solved the life long question in a few short minutes each. There was Stone Phillips with his Dorothy Dixer 'tell me a question', interview and some obviously paid witnesses, both Jewish and Christian. One fellow a Christian was saying Jesus was talking about a heaven on earth, or God ruling as King, which was completely disengenious. For Jesus said 'The Kingdom of Heaven/God is within, and the Kingdom is laid out before all to see but they don't see it. They also missed the point completely about turning over the money changers tables in the temple. Jesus went on to say that it was his Father's house and he didn't need burnt offerings. It was an attack on animal sacrifice. The same fellow then went on to say, that Jesus said he was the messiah at the trial etc. When Jesus actually said 'It is out of your mouth you have said it', and don't the scriptures say ye are all Gods. The gospels themselves were panned, but then they panned the Iliad until Schlieman and the battle of Athos and Herodotus, until recent discoveries. Edgar Cayce actually reinforces the story of the Gospels particularly , Mark ??I think who Cayce said was mostly Peter's words. They intimated that there was no trial before the Sanhedrin and that it was only an interview before Caiphas, they didn't mention Annanias or Nicodemus. The said Jesus was too small fry to get the Sanhedrin out of bed. At this time there were several groups in Palestine, Pharisees, who evolved into modern Judaism,Sadducees, and Essenes. The temple Priests were already persecuting the Essenes and I think it was Elizabeth's ??father who was murdered holding on to the horns of the tabernacle etc etc. As Jesus came out of the Essenes and he had been welcomed into Jerusalem by throngs of people, he would have go the attention of the Sanhedrin alright. Early Christians continued to be persecuted as did the Essenes as heretics by the Judaic Priests, who were actually collaborators with the Roman occupation. Stephen and James were both martyred or stoned to death, not by Romans. St Paul himself who studied under the Pharisee Gamaliel was a great persecutor of Christians until he converted. So we have one Hebrew group persecuting another, what's new? I think the whole premise of NBC was to put the entire blame on the Romans. It is a pretty strong rumour that Pilate's wife had associated with the Christians, hence the hand washing deal .."A Rabbinic view of Jesus' Execution It is taught: They hanged Jesus [Yeshu] on the eve of Passover. Now a crier went forth for forty days before this (saying): --"He goes forth to be stoned because he practiced magic and stirred up Israel to apostasy. Let anyone who knows anything in his favor come forward and speak up for him!" But they found nothing in his favor and they hanged him on the eve of Passover. Ulla said: --"Do you suppose a revolutionary had anything in his favor!" He was an instigator [mesith] (to apostasy) and the Merciful has said: --'You shall not spare or conceal him!' (Deut 13:8)" But it was different with (Jesus), for he was near to the kingdom! --- Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 43a [Note: this account was probably formulated to contradict Christian claims that Jews engineered Jesus' execution without giving him a fair hearing. It agrees with the Fourth Gospel in dating Jesus' death prior to the Passover meal. Otherwise its details are based on Jewish procedures for stoning rather than on information in the gospels.]" " Let us not forget this internecine fighting between several different groups of Hebrews, who have little in common with Jewish attitudes today. However it shows the existence and execution of Jesus, and the attitude of the Priests. I have not seen Gibson's film yet but will as soon as I can, having spent many hours researching and reading about Jesus………So I cannot comment on it…………..ONS..Tony. http://www.geocities.com/aoclery/JESUSININDIA.htm They would have better not have even done that programme on NBC, it added nothing positive and could even cause resentments. Namaste, On further reflection: The Sadducees only believed in the pentateuch and not in prophets etc. In fact they regarded such books as heresy and could suffer the death penalty. As the Temple Priests were no doubt Sadducees it is no wonder they were not happy with Messianics like the Essenes or Jesus.....ONS... Oh on rereading Cayce and the Dead Sea Scrolls, he says there was a Jesus healing near or associated with Pilate's wife.
