Guest guest
Dear Michael: This article by Rabbi Spiro was very enlightening. This historical perspecive on the persecution of Jews because of the passion of Christ is an important one. When religions fight it out it is a terrible thing. About Jews, I think a distinction needs to be made between the religion and the people. The Jewish religion is made obsolete in the true Christian's mind and not the people. The new law of Jesus supercedes the old law of Moses and the guilt of the fall of Adam is done away with by the sacrifice of the Lamb. For modern Christians, Judaism just rises to a new level with Christianity. For modern religious Jews this distinction is not valid, but it is widely understood as the mindset of Christian theology. I think most Christians however lack empathy with the Jews, and the Jews, knowing this, are very cautious about inflammatory events. However the hoopla over this movie has made the event much bigger. For myself, since I am more inclined to Yoga than religion, the error of transfering the mistakes of individuals of Christ's time to the group to which they belong (Jews), is the error of confounding the specific for the general. An error which is common and difficult to spot for emotionally charged minds. It is an error of similars being confounded one for the other. Other errors like this are confounding the relative for the absolute, and the abstract for the concrete. The root of these mistakes is confounding the mind for the Self, the most basic of the confusion of similars. So I would say, let the hoopla die down because censorship is a big issue today and will cloud already soggy minds. Love Bobby G.
