Guest guest
Oh yes, Spring is in the air. As I sit in my office, I look out and see a squirrel at the birdfeeder. They are so cute to watch, I really do not discourage them from feeding. I do have to tap on the window sometimes, though, because they don't know when enough is enough. This one looks different. What is it? As I look the squirrel over, it dawns on me. This one is small! Not nearly as much space on the windowsill as the other ones take. Oh, look. When it grabs onto the feeder I can see it's hind legs. So cute...so easily amused. I watch as the young one experiments with the feeder. I tap on the window and instead of running away, the little bugger turns and peeks into the window. Oh, yes...this one is young. No fear, yet. Suddenly, I see another squirrel approach the feeder from the fence nearby. The brave one moves away. Another little one. There must be a nest close by...they are quite small. They must have just started leaving the nest on their own. I wonder who told them about the feeder? I tap again and this one dives into the bush. So much for youth... For the next few days, I watch as they scamper around the back yard. Zipping here and there, testing out their claws and what they can climb. Slowly, they figure out how to climb the feeders, and how to hang from them. For some reason, I do not see the large ones, just the little ones, showing off for Mom and Dad... http://www.omshaantih.com/Photogallery/Animal%20Kingdom/Squirrels/Young%20Ones/Babes%20In%20Seedland.htm Love, Joyce
