Guest guest
Self is the eternal and perpetual, ever newness. Ever new, ever fresh. We can know this by comparing it to life experiences. I will give you some examples. In life everything gets stale. You love Rasgullas, Chocolate, Mango ice cream, Burfi, Jalebi, Carrot Cake, etc. But if you have enough of it, you will not want more. You may get exhausted and even throw up if you eat or have too much of a good thing. Self is different. It is ever fresh, ever new and so one can perpetually consume it and be consumed by it. Self is always Self consuming. Its nature is that of Self-Awareness, Self-Absorption, Self-Satisfaction. Again, another example from life. Boy meets girl. Boy likes girl. Girl likes boy. They get married. Boy and Girl fight. Boy and Girl get fed up with each other. Boy and Girl get divorced. The cycle of meeting and separating repeats. We do not see this pattern in Self-Realized Sages. For example, Sri Ramana would never say, "I am fed up with the Self today. Let me do something else for a while." No prerequisites are needed for Atma Vichara (Inquiry into our nature) and Self-Realization other than the strong desire to do it. And the truth is that even that desire is not fully up to us but is awakened by Grace. Grace may come as suffering in life, or blessing of a great Soul, or spontaneously without any known reason. Although inquiry into the nature of the Self is simple and can easily be explained, most are not able grasp the significance of it. Out of those few who can grasp it, only a few are able to follow it. It is because of the nature of the mind which thrives and lives on multiplicity, diversity, and complexity. That is the very life blood of the mind. Sages say that all our learning, even scriptural learning is learned ignorance only. Sri Ramana once said that he was fortunate in that he was not attracted to various schools of philosophy and the endless debates associated with them. Self being the ultimate simplicity, the ultimate wholeness, the ultimate completion, can be found only in the present because its nature is that of Presence. We live in the present, but if we consider carefully, we see that we are actually The Presence. We live in the now, and if inquired into see that We Are The Now. Right Here and Now. That is the only place Self is Recognized. Here and Now. Now ness, newness, wholeness, these all can be used to describe the Self-Nature. The material idol is only a snake; while this inner idol is a dragon. Guest guest
Harsha this is great. Right on. The Self is always new and always spotless. If you sit on the sofa you will leave hairs and skin tissue behind, but nothing sticks to the Self. And, furthermore, although we talk about seeking, what we seek is what we are, consciousness. No matter how hard we try, it would not be possible NOT to be consciousness. We are consciousness whether we want to be or not. Guest guest
Dear Michael, Just to clarify, my post about blah, blah, blah was meant to be humorous and was not directed at any one person including myself. It seems your approach of not sticking to any thought is a good one. My practical life and experiences are basic and ordinary and so I don't have much advice to give. As far as the method of inquiry, the real instruction comes from within and clarifies itself as mind focuses on the principle behind it. Even in Kundalini Yoga, they say to let the experience be your teacher. Jnana Yoga is like that as well. Sri Ramana's conversations have been the best source and guide for me.
