Guest guest
Destiny Destiny is just another word for daily life. You can't change it any more than you could a million dollar bill. We like to think of destiny in grandiose terms but isn't it really what happens on any given day? Of course it is. I have been a caregiver for almost four years now. With a fresh cancer diagnosis under our belt, my husband and I did what everyone does in that situation. We caved, collapsed, cried and finally, came back. What else? We suffered. Consciousness is the wild card that we can sometimes play when we can't change what happens to us. We can try to wake up briefly--at least long enough to remind ourselves that "it's only a play." The script has already been written and we are members of Spiritual Actors Equity. The saints and sages are our drama coaches. "Just watch," they say. "It's only a play." Destiny is what it is and yes, angels are producing it, in a sense. There are acts and scenes, and believe you me, they feel devastatingly real when one of the cast members loses his remission. The drama builds. Will he be allowed a new drug on a "compassoniate use" basis? Will I get through another scene in our suffering? I have always tried to "write honest," but I often fail to perform the scene with detachment. I chew the scenery, blow my lines and beg for another take. Don't we all? Where is God when bad things happen to good actors? He is right there calling the shots. He is the Divine Demille. Under his direction and protection we are all assured that the play will be a success. Next week another chapter in our life will unfold according to the script. There is no point in rehearsing our lines because they will be given to us at the very last minute. That is how God works. He likes improv. He even goes so far as to throw pies in our face if that is what it takes to make us humble. He places banana peels in our path and the whole time He is guiding us to rise above it all. If we do, it is only because He has given us a harness like Mary Martin wore in Peter Pan. We can fly, but only according to the script. Destiny never fails to get an audience--the wonder of it is that we never remember that it is only a play. My friend in Maui, John Ramsey, says that you would not stand up during the production of Shakespeare and yell out, "It's only a play!" Life is the same way. The show must go on.....and it always does. So I say to all of us about to enter stage left, "Break a leg."
