Just Communique: 20 May 2004 BALANCED IN IRAQ, TILTED IN GAZA Dear HonestReporting Subscriber, On Wednesday (May 19), two very similar incidents caused the death of 10 Palestinians in Gaza, and about 40 Iraqis along the Syrian border. In both events, local witnesses immediately claimed that military vehicles intentionally fired upon unarmed civilian crowds. In Gaza, the IDF immediately denied this; likewise in Iraq, US commanders firmly disputed it. Responsible news coverage should have conveyed the disputed nature of the two unfortunate incidents. Yet while most media outlets were careful to express the US position prominently in the headline and opening sentence, that same balance was denied to Israel. The effect ― a worldwide suggestion that the IDF deliberately murdered innocent Palestinian protestors. Some examples: Washington Post Iraq - US position presented in headline, first sentence(see full article) Gaza - Israeli position presented in third paragraph.(see full article) Headline "... And some media outlets immediately inflated the casualties: Ireland On-Line: 'Israeli missile strikes kill 23 civilians in Gaza' Voice of America: 'Israeli Forces Fire On Gaza Protesters, at Least 23 Dead ' After the 2002 Jenin experience, one would have thought journalists would have learned that part of the Palestinian strategy in this war is to disseminate false claims of Israeli 'massacres.' This, in the hope the falsities will make international headlines. * * * Since media reports downplayed or omitted the Israeli version of Wednesday's events, HonestReporting provides here the text of the official IDF statement, alongside a helpful aerial photograph: IDF SPOKESPERSON'S ANNOUNCEMENT Today's incident in Rafah is a very grave incident and the IDF expresses deep sorrow over the loss of civilian lives. At no point in this incident was intentional fire opened in the direction of civilians. A large procession of several hundreds demonstrators, among them gunmen, organized by the Palestinian Authority, left central Rafah along the main road towards IDF forces in Tel-Sultan. As the crowd, with the gunmen among them, drew near IDF forces, a warning fire of a single missile was fired from a helicopter into an open area, not towards the demonstrators. In addition, flares were fired in the air to deter the crowd and to prevent endangering the demonstrators. As this did not deter the crowd and they continued to converge on the troops, machine gun fire was opened towards a wall of an abandoned structure along the side of the road and then four tank shells were fired at this abandoned structure. It is possible that the causalities were a result of the tank fire on the abandoned structure. The details of the incident continue to be investigated. It should be mentioned that the scene of the incident is an area of combat and an area of frequent exchanges of fire. The road has been rigged with explosive charges planted by the Palestinians. The IDF has not yet cleared the road of these explosives. At this stage it is difficult to determine the cause of the civilian casualties. The incident is being investigated thoroughly at this time. The IDF has approached the Palestinians and offered medical assistance, including the evacuation of the casualties to Israeli hospitals. * * * Two items support the IDF statement, yet received very little media attention: ● The New York Times stated that "a reporter who was present, but not at the front of the march, saw two young men with semiautomatic rifles at the start of the route." ● On Tuesday (May 18), Palestinians accused Israel of killing 2 young children, but it soon came to light that the children were actually killed by a bomb planted irresponsibly by local terrorists. It is altogether possible that a similar bomb caused Wednesday's disaster. * * * Did your local paper fail to prominently indicate the Israeli version of Wednesday's event ― thereby suggesting the IDF deliberately fired upon innocents? Meanwhile, did the paper grant US military spokesmen the very balance Israel was denied? HonestReporting encourages you to write a letter to the editor, pointing out any unfair coverage of the Rafah event, and the double standard applied to Israeli vs. American military acts. As the investigation of the Rafah incident continues, media outlets should continue to provide both sides of the story. Thank you for your ongoing involvement in the battle against media bias. So declares Oriana Fallaci in her new book, La Forza della Ragione (''The Force of Reason''). And the famed Italian journalist is right: Christianity's ancient stronghold of Europe is rapidly giving way to Islam. Two factors mainly contribute to this world-shaking development. *The hollowing out of Christianity. Europe is increasingly a post-Christian society, one with a diminishing connection to its tradition or its historic values. The numbers of believing, observant Christians have collapsed in the last two generations to the point that some observers call it the ''new dark continent.'' Already, analysts estimate Britain's mosques host more worshippers each week than does the Church of England. *An anemic birth rate. Indigenous Europeans are dying out. Sustaining a population requires each woman on average to bear 2.1 children; in the European Union, the overall rate is one-third short, at 1.5 per woman, and falling. One study finds that, should current population trends continue and immigration cease, today's population of 375 million could decline to 275 million by 2075. To keep its working population even, the EU needs 1.6 million immigrants a year; to sustain the present workers-to-retirees ratio requires an astonishing 13.5 million immigrants annually. Into the void are coming Islam and Muslims. As Christianity falters, Islam is robust, assertive and ambitious. As Europeans under-reproduce at advanced ages, Muslims do so in large numbers while young. Some 5 percent of the EU, or nearly 20 million people, presently identify themselves as Muslims; if current trends continue, that number will reach 10 percent by 2020. If non-Muslims flee the new Islamic order, as seems likely, the continent could be majority-Muslim within decades. When that happens, grand cathedrals will appear as vestiges of a prior civilization -- at least until a Saudi-style regime transforms them into mosques or a Taliban-like regime blows them up. The great national cultures -- Italian, French, English, and others -- will likely wither, replaced by a new transnational Muslim identity that merges North African, Turkish, subcontinental and other elements. This prediction is hardly new. In 1968, the British politician Enoch Powell gave his famed ''rivers of blood'' speech in which he warned that in allowing excessive immigration, the United Kingdom was ''heaping up its own funeral pyre.'' (Those words stalled a hitherto promising career.) In 1973, the French writer Jean Raspail published Camp of the Saints, a novel that portrays Europe falling to massive, uncontrolled immigration from the Indian subcontinent. The peaceable transformation of a region from one major civilization to another, now under way, has no precedent in human history, making it easy to ignore such voices. There is still a chance for the transformation not to play itself out, but the prospects diminish with time. Here are several possible ways it might be stopped: *Changes in Europe that lead to a resurgence of Christian faith, an increase in childbearing, or the cultural assimilation of immigrants; such developments can theoretically occur but what would cause them are hard to imagine. *Muslim modernization: For reasons no one has quite figured out (education of women? abortion on demand? adults too self-absorbed to have children?), modernity leads to a drastic reduction in the birth rate. Also, were the Muslim world to modernize, the attraction of moving to Europe would diminish. *Immigration from other sources. Latin Americans, being Christian, would more or less permit Europe to keep its historic identity. Hindus and Chinese would increase the diversity of cultures, making it less likely that Islam would dominate. Current trends suggest that Islamization will happen, for Europeans seem to find it too strenuous to have children, stop illegal immigration or even diversify their sources of immigrants. Instead, they prefer to settle unhappily into civilizational senility. Europe has simultaneously reached unprecedented heights of prosperity and peacefulness -- and shown a unique inability to sustain itself (one demographer, Wolfgang Lutz, notes that ''Negative momentum has not been experienced on a large scale in world history''). Is it inevitable that the most brilliantly successful society also be the first in danger of collapse due to a lack of cultural confidence and offspring? Ironically, creating a hugely desirable place to live would seem also to be a recipe for suicide. The human comedy continues. Daniel Pipes is director of the Middle East Forum. "The Golden Report" jerry "Jerry Golden" JGolden How about some truth. Thu, 20 May 2004 09:02:51 +0200 Organization: The Golden Report http://www.thegoldenreport.com 5-20-04 How about some facts Intelligence and I might add very good intelligence that weapons brought in from Iran and Saudi Arabia by Hizbullah are sitting near the Israeli Egyptian border ready to be brought in by tunnels into Rafah. Some of them still in a tunnel that goes under the Suez Canal near a town called El-Arish where they were unloaded from a ship. These weapons were to escalate the battle between the Terrorists groups controlled by Yasser Arafat to make it appear that the IDF was ran out of Gaza much like that of Southern Lebanon by the Hizbullah. These are not just guns and grenades what we are talking about is a very large shipment of Strella shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles capable of bring down commercial airliners as well as military and Sagger anti-tank missiles to kill many IDF soldiers. With a collection of other long range missiles that can be aimed at many Israeli towns, killing many Jews. With this type of information Israel had little choice but to stop this shipment and those certain to come after it, and to do it now before thousands of Israelis were killed. In the mean time Egypt sits still and will not lift a hand to stop the smuggling of weapons into Israel. It would be impossible for Egypt not to be in full knowledge of these shipments yet they turn a blind eye. This is the same country that the US has armed with F-16 and many other long range weapons knowing they have no enemies who means them any harm, and that there only desire is to destroy Israel. I heard the wonderful political speech George Bush just gave to secure some Jewish and Christian votes. But maybe someone should ask him why he will not pick up the phone and talk to his old friend President Mubarak of Egypt who stays at his ranch, and ask him why he doesn’t cut off the smuggling tunnels. Or why he doesn’t stop the ships that bring the weapons in from Iran then stocked piled in the desert waiting their turn to come through the tunnels into Gaza? Israel had no choice but to launch a strong operation dubbed " Operation Rainbow" to clear out the houses that the Terrorists used to hide their snipers and weapons smuggling tunnels. Yasser Arafat ordered tens of thousands of Palestinians to march on the IDF, with armed Hamas and Islamic Jihad Terrorists among them. Knowing that if they ever got close to the IDF soldiers at the Philadelphi Route it would cause a shoot out, for they would have to be stopped. For without any doubt they would overwhelm and kill the IDF soldiers. The route the Palestinians were coming down was also heavy mined. The IAF helicopter fired a missile into an open field in front of the on coming Palestinians and the IDF tanks fired shells into an empty building along side of them to frighten them into scattering knowing that if they didn’t stop many would have to be killed. It was then there was an explosion in the middle of the group. The IDF and the IAF both say they never fired into the middle of the crowd and that it is under investigation. But in the mean time Israel has offered to give medical help to the wounded which the PA refused. The real villain here is Yasser Arafat, he was so upset over operation Rainbow that it would once again stop his shipment of arms from Iran to kill Jews so he order his people into the streets to die for his cause. His logic seems to be that if he couldn’t get the weapons he wanted for his terrorists he’d set up a situation that would bring the world down on Israel once again. Israel has no choice but to widen the Philadelphi Route in Rafah, for if Israel pulls out of Gaza the IDF will have to patrol that border. Israel can never give Arafat access to the Egyptian border, then he wouldn’t even need tunnels. Over the past couple weeks these houses have been used by Palestinian snipers and many of them have tunnels under them for the movement of weapons from Egypt to Gaza. I remember a month or so back that when the IDF blew up a tunnel they looked on the Egyptian side of the border and a lot of smoke came out of an Egyptian Police Station. This gives you some idea what we are up against. The real victims here are not just us Israelis but the Palestinians for they have been brainwashed with Islamic doctrine from birth, and along came Yasser Arafat who told them that to be a martyr for Allah was the highest calling. I have seen a glimmer of hope over the past few weeks, even King Abdullah has hinted that Arafat should step down. Several noted and well-known Palestinian Journalist has finally got the courage to say he should step down. But as I said it is but a glimmer and the real fire is burning from the Arafat camp and that includes Hamas and Islamic Jihad who could not operated without his approval. In closing I want you to notice the pictures shown by CNN & BBC showing all the kids who were being carried out of the area. As soon as there is any attack by the IDF Palestinian men start grabbing kids and carrying them in front of the cameras. What is even more disturbing is the Reporters know what is happening but show the pictures anyway. CNN & BBC reported that up to 18 were killed, but the real number has proven to be 8, but that is being called a massacre. It’s like the time when one of the IAF cameras caught the act of a "corpse" that fell off the stretcher he was being carried on, and jumped up and got back on the stretcher. At the same time a US helicopter fired into a house full of family members having a wedding in Iraq killing 45, also regrettable I am sure, but watch which one gets the most publicity. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, for our son Joel, for all the IDF soldiers and all those who have come to fight the Islamic enemy. Pray for this Ministry and your part in it. Guest guest
Dear Michael, I heard from the awakend ones that the best thing one can do to help the world is to realise oneself. The wave of the enlightenment will spread all over the planet and contribute to the uplifting of humanity as a whole. Ramana with his silence and his apparent non-doing was able to spread his silence all over the world and he is still doing it!! Is there anything more powerful than this? Of course we are not all Ramanas. Realisation of the Self and Love is the only way, any other thing will interfere with the spontaneous unfolding of the Universe. Who are we to know what is the best way of unfolding? It is the way that is happening now. The exacerbation of conflicts, the ruthless profit making, the egocentric attitude more and more going to extremes are probably the way IT seeks itself. Many realised being of the modern world have reached enlightenment only after a profound crisis of depression or the like. So it seems that the evolotion of Consciousenss, if we can speak of evolution, is going through the 'extremization' of polarities to reach its 'goal'. This universe is made through polarities, it wouldn't exist otherwise. Avasa, my friend and teacher of Advaita answering to a question about Iraq, was saying that are the people that want peace that create wars. Why? Because there is a law of equilibrium that rules this universe and so much 'evil' has to be balanced by so much 'good' and viceversa. I don't really like this law, but if it is true, there is nothing that we can really do but spontaneous unplanned actions, that will be the only actions that, arising from the whole, will not interfere with its natural unfolding. As for myself what I was lead to choose is realisation of the Self and Love. That is, I just send love to all sometimes more specifically to some place on the Earth, but without the intention to change anything, that 's quite difficult, but I try. It is like the Buddhist Metta meditation. But sometimes Buddhist wants to change things and I feel it is better not to have even that intention. The universe knows more than we know unless we become it. in love marifa - Michael Bindel Thursday, May 20, 2004 8:25 PM THANK YOU Dear friends in Satsangh thank you all of you who did care for my message I felt it like LOVE IN ACTION as soon as I am ready I will answer thoroughly.... in the meantime thank you soooo much love to all of you michael bindel TONY AND ALL THE OTHERS WHO DID NOT PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOUR FEELING WHATS GOING ON ON OUR PLANET AND WHAT YOU SUGGEST I and we all SHOULD DO??? You are wise as well as profound as well as poetic... the universe surely flows through you... today I was working on a webpage and went searching for the title of a Rumi poem and found this link, with a story which really touched me, so I pass it on to you all... ....I simply put my hand on its quaking, dying body; the eyes of the mother met mine. I could hear the mother say "Do something-now, help my baby." In my natural self, I was simply Jon, another human being struggling with all the forces of life and death, pain, sickness as everyone around me. Yet, as my hand was on this child, another reality came to me, the reality of life eternal, of a God who was not simply in the distance, but moved with compassion to those who could not help themselves like this little child. This was not a time to discuss the why of suffering... http://kabiza.com/Medical-care-and-Miracles.htm Love, Joyce
