Guest guest
Dear Friends: I believe it was Hippocrates (the father of medicine) who said, "Let food be your medicine." The critical role of food is noted again and again in yogic texts and scriptures. Now western medicine has recognized the importance of plant foods. Recently I spoke to a close friend of the family, who is a well respected Indian doctor, now in his mid 60s. About 30 years ago, I remember we were all sitting at the dinner table and this wonderful person was telling my father about the stress of being a doctor and often having to make very difficult, and sometimes life and death decisions. The good doctor mentioned his interest in meditation and my father read his palms (which he did for everyone who visited us) and told him that he would do very well in his career and things would go well for him. Over the last 30 years I have watched my friend evolve in his thinking. Recently when he came to visit us, we reminisced about my father. The doctor mentioned that he is trying now to eat mostly raw foods and nuts and it has helped him with his health. He still has weakness for Dosas and Samosas and Pakoras but tries to minimize their consumption. I might have him write an article on fruitarianism for the next issue of the HS Mag. If any of you wish to write on the topic of food and the vedas or spiritual aspect of food, please let me know. Sri Ramana when asked about the rules to follow for practice on the path, typically said that the best rule was to eat sattvic food in moderation.
