Guest guest
David: Cannot speak...too many tears in my eyes from howling with laughter... Oh God... I have been there...to IKEA Korea's gift to humankind... Sort of a twisted joke about design and furnishing... Oh, and it all falls apart, too...I have warned folks but they did not heed... I too like a bit of soul. I make my own furniture when I can...or find either old American and European antiques with just the right amount of human touch still imprinted in the wood... Real wood, real oil, real leather or fabrics... I still own my mom's dining table and chairs which I lovingly reupholstered myself...it's an early American maple set...with this amazing glowing honey maple finish that just says "here is a place to put the best of your meals!" But, I beg to differ about the conclusion of your story... You did find something with soul... Several somethings in fact... The lady at the store with real furniture made from real wood... Your own sense of who and what you are...what you love and admire in the world around you... And of course, There's all of us just rolling on the floor laughing along with you... And that could only happen if we are in harmony with you... The scary thing is that some rare pieces of IKEA that survive by some fluke will in the future fetch huge sums of money as "Antiques." Shudder! Peace, Zenbob
Guest guest
I went to this huge place called 'IKEA' today. I had never heard of it before. I have been remodeling my bathroom for a number of months now and I was looking for a lovely piece of furniture with some soul to drop a sink into. This place was surreal. I couldn't believe it. It was like the size of 2 or 3 Home Depots (which are like the size of like 3 football fields) with *2* levels. One level for crap. And another level for still more crap. Everything in this weird place was made up of particle board. (cardboard that's a little bit harder) You name it. Kitchen cupboards. Cabinets. Tables. Dressers. More tables, entertainment centers bookshelves and still more tables all made up of particle board. I even think the employees were made of particle board. The funny thing about this is that there were about 5 thousand people there all roaming around the rooms composed and decorated with particle board furniture and whatnot like zombies. They seemed excited. Enthralled even. I didn't check but I bet some even wet their pants. Many were on cell phones talking to loved ones about what they were going to buy, and what color and how many shelves and so on... I left. I was looking for something real. Something with some soul. Some character. A few exits down the interstate I found a huge furniture store (not nearly as huge as IKEA though, I don't think the moon is as big as IKEA) It had *real* wood furniture! No one was in there. A nice lady from New York country tried to help me find my piece with soul. She really, really tried. We didn't find it. But I told her I gave her an A+ for effort though. She gave me her card and she gave me a tip about an antique place. She told me I would find what I was looking for there. I didn't go yet but I have a feeling she may be right. Well, getting to the point of my story, I think that the world is like my experience today too. Everyone wants crap but no one really wants what is real, what has soul and what endures... peace

Hi ZenBob it's nice that you have the skills to do that. Woodworkers have always impressed me with their artform. > But, I beg to differ about the conclusion of your story... > > You did find something with soul... > > Several somethings in fact... > > The lady at the store with real furniture made from real wood... > > Your own sense of who and what you are...what you love and admire > in the > world around you... > > And of course, > > There's all of us just rolling on the floor laughing along with > you... > And that could only happen if we are in harmony with you... Well actually the conclusion of my rambling wasn't that I didn't find anything with soul. You are correct though in the sense that we do discover soul all the time. (even though we sometimes miss it) My conclusion was more along the lines that we often settle for less and are too easily impressed with illusion. (not withstanding the economics of it all) And believe me I do own my share of particle board. Functional for a brief period of time and cheap. Much like the world. What lasts forever?
