MMR: A reaction that they can't deny Think MMR vaccine, and you probably start thinking autism. But while researchers arm-wrestle over a possible causal link, the vaccine has been proven irrefutably to cause at least one serious adverse reaction that the media has not picked up on. The vaccine, given to millions of children every year, will triple the risk of a febrile seizure, according to a major Danish survey. The risk is at its greatest within two weeks of the child being vaccinated. After that, the risk drops to a similar rate found in a child who has never been vaccinated. However, children who suffered their first seizure because of the vaccination had a 19 per cent chance of suffering further seizures afterwards, although researchers say there is no likelihood of the child developing epilepsy later. Despite these reassurances, their claim doesn't fit with the facts. Children who have recurrent seizures have a 4 per cent chance of developing epilepsy. The research team notes that the rate of seizure after the vaccine is far higher among children whose family has a history of epilepsy, which also suggests their dismissal of a link may need re-examining. Febrile seizure is a relatively common occurrence among small children, and in most cases it is a harmless incident. Nonetheless it is extremely disturbing for everyone concerned. The child often loses consciousness, and starts to shake. Sometimes the child becomes rigid. A seizure can last anything from a few seconds up to 15 minutes. The Danish study involved 537,171 children who were born in Denmark between 1991 and 1998. Of those, 439,251 had the MMR vaccine, and 17,986 children had at least one febrile seizure. (Source: Journal of the American Medical Association, 2004; 292: 351-7). * To find out everything you ever wanted to know about the MMR and other vaccines, you have to have your own copy of the WDDTY Vaccination Bible and the Special MMR Update Report. How many oncologists does it take to change a light bulb, or what constitutes a cancer 'cure'? The medical establishment recently criticized Prince Charles for advocating some alternative remedies, such as the Gerson diet. Most of these therapies were supported merely by 'anecdotal' evidence, they said. In other words most of us know someone who has been helped by an alternative therapy, but this doesn't add up to scientific evidence of a global cure for cancer. The UK's one and only professor of complementary therapy, Edzard Ernst, entered the debate this week and, not surprisingly, he's come down forcibly on the side of conventional medicine. But then he usually does. Ernst says that most alternative cancer therapies promoted on the Web are dangerous, unscientific and just don't work, or not often and not for most people. So we're back to anecdotal evidence, and the percentage that we need in order to define any therapy as a cure. It's probably not unreasonable to assume that therapies that have anecdotal evidence of success might have a 2 to 3 per cent 'cure rate'. Funny enough, that's the cure rate of chemotherapy for some cancers, according to the Department of Health. No doubt we'll be hearing the legions decrying chemotherapy any moment now. * So what does work in cancer therapy, alternative or otherwise? The chapter-and-verse on every treatment, and the scientific evidence for each, can be found in the WDDTY Cancer Handbook. The Alliance for Natural Health has this week filed its written observations with the European Court of Justice as part of its challenge to overturn the directive that will ban many natural food vitamin and mineral supplements throughout Europe. This is the latest move in a process that began last January when the Alliance achieved a referral from the UK's High Court to the European courts. If the Alliance fails, the FSD will be introduced next August 1, and will allow for sale only those products that contain nutrients included in a 'positive list'. The list favours synthetic vitamin and inorganic mineral ingredients-strangely, the type manufactured in bulk by the pharmaceutical industry-and omits 300 sources of vitamins and minerals, many of which are found in foods. As a consequence many natural foods will also disappear from the shelves. The Alliance is representing the small manufacturers that are producing innovative products that will be banned under the FSD. It is arguing that the positive list is unlawful under EU law, and has no legal base. Article 95 of the European Treaty, for example, seeks to improve the internal market, and the FSD is contrary to that. For more information, and to make a donation to support the Alliance's legal challenge, go to: http://www.alliance-natural-health STATISTIC OF THE WEEK Just 13 per cent of Americans believe that pharmaceutical companies are 'generally honest and trustworthy'. The industry is placed on a par with the tobacco and oil industries, and 'the managed care companies' (huh?) Public confidence in drug companies has plunged harder and faster than for any other industry, the Harris Poll survey has discovered. (Source: British Medical Journal, July 31, 2004). PHONE MASTS: The vital report you must read The authorities tell us they are safe, but evidence is suggesting that mobile phone masts can cause cancer, especially among the very young. So far 18 sites in the UK have been identified as health hazards. Planning authorities throughout Europe have dismissed residents' concerns, and have said that base stations have not been responsible for clusters of illnesses, even though they have happened only after installation. **In one street in South Woodford, Essex five people contracted cancer after 16 mobile phone antennae were placed on top of a block of flats 30 yards away. **Of just 180 people living within 250 metres of a 15-foot mast, three died of brain hemorrhage and one child contracted epilepsy. **A housing development in Leeds has the highest cancer incidence in the area. It also happens to have the greatest density of masts. **In Wishaw, Warwickshire, of the 50 people living within 500 metres of a base station, 34 have reported medical problems, including seven cases of cancer. The residents have pulled down the mast. **In Paris, Orange, the mobile phone operator, has dismantled a mast it had erected on a schoolhouse roof after eight children who attend the school contracted cancer. **In Valladolid, Spain four young children were diagnosed with cancer after a mobile phone base was installed 50 metres away, seven times the average national incidence. "In 32 years there had never been a case of childhood cancer here," said the local doctor Luis Martin. This vital report is included in the August issue of What Doctors Don't Tell You. It provides all the available evidence on the dangers-and what you can do to protect yourself and your family. Too many of us live close to a base station-and it's essential you find out what you can do. Try Epsom salts, suggests one reader (and let's not start the debate from ages back about the availability of the Salts) coupled with Idosalve, available from the European College of Bowen Studies. On a different tack, one reader is convinced they are linked to the emotions. Clear any emotional blocks and the bunions will disappear, she says. On a more physical plane, one reader says to stop wearing high-heeled shoes and any shoes that don't fit properly. Then visit a good physiotherapist to make sure the spine is not misaligned, and then see an Alexander practitioner to learn how to walk properly. Eye herpes: A nasty infection, this, but how can it be treated, asked a reader last week? Try treating it with colloidal silver, suggests one reader. Put some in a dropper and then apply to the infected eye two to three times a day. Alternatively try a product called Ambrotose, and bathe the eye using an eye cup after mixing with contact lens saline solution. Cool the area with ice at the first sign of an eruption. The cold inhibits the virus spreading. One woman treated similar infections when she was in Zambia by using very dilute rose oil - one drop in four litres of boiled water - although a better remedy would be to use rose water or hydrolat at a dilution of 10mls per 50mls of distilled water. Another option is L-Lysine and vitamin C. Six 1000mg tablets of L-Lysine can be taken daily, along with three 1000mg vitamin C, also taken daily. The immune system can be improved by taking echinacea or olive leaf. Avoid foods rich in arginine, such as chocolate, nuts and eggs. Hydrocele: Then there was the woman last time whose 22-month-old son had been diagnosed with hydrocele. Doctors recommend an operation, but what else can she do? A tricky one, and it almost had you stumped. However, one woman's son had the same problem, and she tried the homeopathic remedy abrotanum. The testicle reduced to normal size, and no surgery was necessary. Type II diabetes: What remedies can tackle type II diabetes? One reader was aware of an Indian homeopathic remedy, but couldn't recall the name. One homeopath suggests Syzigium Mother Tincture or Gymnema Sylvestre (Shardunikha). The latter is a powder from Indian, which, our reader tells us, tastes terrible, and so needs to be put into capsules. Another reader tells us that diabetes is controlled in India with equal amounts of turmeric powder and amalaki powder (3gms each twice a day in water). Also try bitter gourd (karavellaka) as part of your diet. GBS (Group B Strep): One reader who is five months pregnant has been diagnosed with GBS. Any way this can be cleared up naturally? Well, it made the blood boil of one nurse midwife in the USA who says the antibiotic protocol recommended by the CDC is outrageous. GBS are harmless bacteria found in the vagina and cervix, she says, although there have been cases of infants getting infected during birth, and even dying as a result. Instead of antibiotics, try five drops of tea tree oil in the bath. Lichen planus: One poor reader has this infection in her mouth. She's been told it's untreatable - but is it, she wonders? Well, quite a few of you suggested treating it with aloe vera spray, or try Chinese herbal medicine. Alternatively try the right diet for your blood type, as postulated by Dr Peter D'Adamo. AOB: Arrythmia - try magnesium supplements. They're good for general muscle spasms, including the heart. A few more thoughts about treating an itchy scalp: it's a sign of a low immune system, says one, while another suggests the reader should shampoo her hair with her own urine (ideally the first of the morning). More thoughts on tinnitus: it could be caused by TMJ (temporomanibular joint syndrome), which can be treated by a dentist, suggests one reader. Perhaps, also, the sufferer could be low in zinc, or try the Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. Last time we mentioned the democratic process that will allow local residents in the UK to decide if they want their water supply fluoridated. Don't get too excited, says one reader- fluoridating water is a compulsory medication and so against human rights. One gentleman a few E-news back wanted to know about a book in Italian about arthritis. Try this website, says one reader: http://www.ilgiardinodeilibri.it . Chronic back pain is a perennial, and one reader has something to add to the debate. The Northshore Hospital in Sydney, Australia has some interesting data that may help. Tantalizingly, our correspondent doesn't tell us what it is! Readers' queries Painful ball of foot: One reader has this problem, caused by minor degeneration of the first MTP joint of the left foot. There's some swelling, but no redness. Our reader has tried ice packs, bandages, foot inserts, reflexology and osteopathy, all to no avail. The doctor has prescribed an NSAID, and our reader has also been taking glucosamine and EPA. Other suggestions very welcome. Bedwetting: One reader's eight-year-old niece still wets the bed. The doctor has prescribed drugs, but she wonders if there are any natural alternatives to try first. White spot: One reader has a little white spot under the right eye. He/she's been told it's a sign of high cholesterol, but is it? And can anything be done? Neuropathy: One poor reader is suffering badly. Only strong painkillers seem to help. Anything else you can suggest that might help? Omega-3 sources: One reader's son is allergic to nuts, seeds and fish. Is there any other way of getting omega-3 into the diet? * To search the WDDTY database - where every word from the last 14 years of research can be found ? click on http://www.wddty.co.uk/search/infodatabase.asp Listen to Lynne On the radio: Hear Lynne McTaggart on Passion the innovative DAB Digital Radio Station focusing on your health and your environment - http://www.wddty.co.uk/passion_main.asp On demand: Select and listen to any of Lynne's archived broadcasts on Passion, there's a new one each week - http://www.wddty.co.uk/passion_archive.asp View missed/lost e-News broadcasts: View our e-News broadcast archives, follow this link - http://www.wddty.co.uk/archive.asp Help us spread the word If you can think of a friend or acquaintance who would like a FREE copy of What Doctors Don't Tell You, please forward their name and address to: info.
