Guest guest
Namaste, There are excellent benefits from culture, as in Bharat/India, which is now overwhelmed by materialism but still preserves the Vedanta, in the countryside. As I have said before the riding that I live in is 42% Indian, and my member of parliament-Cheema is also Indian. So I enjoy the diversity. The majority are Sikhs with several Gurudwaras, but there are Hindus and Muslims as well. My Barbers are Irakis for example, left under Saddam, now waiting for the Americans to leave. Seemingly small differences can make a big difference. Yesterday a friend of my daughter's, a Punjabi-Canadian girl originally from England, came to visit us. For advice, for she has just split with her husband and this has caused a lot of problems with her previous in-laws. The main problem being that she is now ostracised for getting a divorce even though she was badly abused, and has two boys also. The main difference is that she was raised in England and her husband was raised in a village in the Punjab; so although they are both Sikhs there differences were patent and obviously not bridgeable. Another daughter has an Indian friend who is a Muslim, and she was going out with a Hindu doctor with an Oxford Degree, who she was in love with. Her family forced her to marry a Muslim from a village in India who pumps gas, and she hasn't seen her five month old son for months because he is with the husband's parents in the country. So she talks to my daughter. Maybe they talk to my family because of our long standing Indian connections, I don't know. However there is a cultural gulf between those raised in the West and those raised in the Villages, even in the same religion. Leading me to summise that culture is more an influence than even religion........ONS..Tony.
