Dear friends,

 

Here is a versification of a poem by Rumi which shows that what we are studying

is also found in

the Sufi tradition .

>From the Divan No. 4.

 

THE CALLER AND THE CALLED

 

 

King David said “Lord since you have no need for us,

What wisdom was there in creating two worlds?”

 

God replied “Oh timebound man, I am a hidden treasure,

I sought that love and compassion should be known,

I gave a mirror, its face the heart, its back the world,

Its back seems better if the face is unknown to you.”

 

When straw’s mixed with clay, how can the mirror reflect ?

When you part the two then the glass becomes clear.

Grape juice doesn’t become rich, red, ruby wine

Unless it ferments for a while in an oaken cask.

If you want your heart to shine, clear and bright,

You must make a little effort and try to wake up !

 

My God said to my soul “you came as you went,

Where’s the trace of my grace and munificence ?”

 

It’s known that copper can be transmuted into gold,

Our raw copper has been transformed by God’s alchemy.

 

With His grace the Sun doesn’t desire crown and robe,

He serves as a cap to millions of bald, ageing men,

And a cloak to those that roam beaches, stark naked.

 

Sweet Jesus rode a donkey, for humility’s sake.

How else could that God of the western world ride ?

 

Oh soul, search and enquire like the stream’s water ,

And to gain eternal life, reflect on your coming death.

 

Keep God and Absolute Self in constant remembrance,

Until the petty, phantom, egotistic ‘me’ is forgotten

That you may be totally absorbed in the ‘ Divine call’

Without distinction between the Caller and the called .
