Free Run means they can run around a fenced off area inside and outside but are fed specifically. Vegetarian food. It is all very new age but is in the supermarkets. To answer your question, I sometimes find it impossible to avoid eggs. Especially in today's world of packaged food etc. Without causing offence and difficulty. However I refuse to eat meat to please anyone. I would rather hurt the sensitivities of the person than participate in the slaughter of an animal. Lesser of evils again. It is all where we are at, but the first step of compassion and daya is to not participate in the slaughter. ISKON keep cows but retire them................ONS...Tony. http://www.geocities.com/aoclery/AVEGETARIANandAHIMSA.htm

Guest guest
Hello Joyce, Free-range is pretty common in the US too, and you should be able to get them at your supermarket, or at the very least your health food store. Where I live there is a good farmer's market open much of the year, that also sells local free-range organic eggs and raw milk cheeses. My idea of a good life includes being able to get whole, healthy, fresh raw organic milk from well-cared for cows. For a while I had a nice secret itinerant arrangement with a charming local farmer for fresh raw milk (illegal to sell in this state), but last year his small farm went under. Now a new local organic farm is going to start selling shares in cows. You can only have raw milk here legally if you own the cow. So I will buy a share, a tenth of a cow, and that will entitle me to regularly available raw milk. Such a joy. I hope I get to pet the cow, her little velvety ears, in my visits to the farm, and get to know her by name. Guest guest
Thanks Jill and Tony, for explaining what free range means. For those who are lacto-vegetarians, this seems like the only humane approach. For myself, I have basically decided not to consume dairy products from a health standpoint as well. I no longer eat eggs and stopped eating them when I stopped eating meat. It took me awhile to get used to not eating eggs, but I have done quite well, and it helps keep the weight down, an added benefit :-) As for packaged goods, I always check everything I buy now for the ingredients. I have not restricted my children's diets in the same fashion, although I do not keep meat or eggs in my house. There have been times when I have felt a bit conflicted about that as to them, but since their father eats meat, etc, they get it when they are with him, so I figure that creates a better balance.
