Harsha - Yoga diet

Dear Harsha,

Osiyo! Hello! I was diagnosed with immune illness in

the form of acute multiple chemical sensitivity and

environmental illness 14 years ago, while living in

the very polluted air of Atlanta, Georgia.

Atlanta is the location of several high-tech chemical

plants that produce chemicals with long, long exotic

names. I got very sick there.

The diet you are describing is very similar to the

diet that I have been on during these years of

chemical recovery; it is a diet that will begin to

detox the heavy, unhealthy things the body takes on in

the modern environment. I wish you good luck with it!

It has sustained me and given me good energy and

healing. The only difference for me, is that I have to

rotate my foods on a four day basis to keep the

antigens low in the body. This keeps the chemical

sensitivity at a lower level and helps with my

illness.

Living up in the high mountains has also very much

helped my healing. The strong west wind off the

Continental Divide keeps the local air cleared out.

It is not easy to find healthy environments in our

world today; it is a good idea to stay aware of the

things that can help us--sattvic and yogic diet are

always helpful!

Dear Sister Judith,

I read a little about environmental illness some years ago. I remember

being amazed at how it permeates every aspect of living. Hearing you

describe it makes me think of other kinds of illnesses where the body's

immune system seems to become totally overwhelmed and breaks down,

like chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS or CFS). Is

there any cure for what you have? You have had it a long time. What

other kinds of things have you done to heal, in addition to dietary

changes and moving to a more healthy location? I had CFIDS for about

11 years. The sensitivity to any toxins became very profound during

that time, and environmental illness was one of the things that was

examined as a possibility. Like you, that experience led to a complete

change in eating, living conditions, and to learning a wide range of

holistic healing modalities.

Currently I serve on a chemical hygiene committee at my university that

examines our conscious and unconscious use, exposure, and management of

chemicals in the university environment. In addition, last year I

worked with an architect to design and build a new building for the

program I teach. I wanted to make a building that would be very

healthy and 'green', and it was surprising how many choices and

assumptions on the part of the construction team and project manager

needed to be challenged. So much of what we do culturally in our

architecture and building designs and decisions is not supportive of

our best physical, mental, and spiritual health. I guess this is

obvious to many, but overall it is rather dismaying to see some of the

dismally life-denying choices we make as a culture regarding the way we

house and care for ourselves in our physical environment.

I'd be interested in hearing more of your experience.

Dear One:

Our environment is no doubt filled with things our body does not need. Media

brainwashes women from childhood into believing that they do not look nice

unless they wear lipstick and spray on perfume, etc. Most of these products have

chemicals. But poor people in order to look and smell "nice" spend their money

on such stuff. Scientific research however informs us that nature has made

people such that they are attracted to the smell of the sweat of the opposite

sex.

Now the same thing is happening with men and they are being brainwashed to use

deodrant and even put on chemicals on their faces as if soap and water and oil

is not enough. In a society where looking good and being accepted into the norm

is so critical, people are always feeling anxious. What can we do?

Love and blessings

Re: Harsha - Yoga diet

Dear Sister Judith,

I read a little about environmental illness some years ago.

Love, serve, and be helpful, but without getting disgusted, tired, pessimistic,

and exhausted. Blessings dear souls, blessings!

Dear Jill,

You raised some good points. It must be great to be sitting in a

building that you designed to be healthy. Thanks to Maharshi Bingo for

pointing out that sweat is good and the way nature intended things to

be. Certainly the Maharshi's suggestions would save some money. I am

copying this message to Sister Judith who has had to quit the

groups temporarily.

Hope you are all well.

Harsha
