Many stars have to form in a series, fusing elements starting with hydrogen and exploding after a lifetime, before creatures composed of the formed elements can evolve, actually seeing light and that without light first (star light) no light can be seen at all. Sri Ramana was simply indicating that Self-Knowing does not require a medium separate from itself to know it self. The words always fall short of Silence. As far as which translation is better, I have no idea but got mine from the "Collected Works of Ramana Maharshi" that is published by Ramanashram and it was translated by Professor K. Swaminathan.
