There is neither creation nor destruction, Neither destiny nor free-will; Neither path nor achievement; This is the final truth. -Sri Ramana Maharshi However, you are correct that are many, many quotations where people are both urged to "do things" as if they had free will to choose, and also passages which urge acceptance of what was meant to be. Perhaps the best approach is to consider the context in which these sayings occur. Rather than say it has to be one way or the other, saying that neither are true presents a paradox which is very much worth contemplation.
