Regarding the importance of

not misidentifying or confusing

the temporary sumbmergence

of the ego in the Self, or many other possible spiritual experiences with

Liberation,

Sri Ramana gives the following warning:

Maharshi: "This does not mean salvation.

Such a condition is termed

manolaya or temporary stillness of thought.

Manolaya means concentration,

temporarily arresting the movement

of thoughts. As soon as this concentration ceases, thoughts,

old and new, rush in as usual;

and even if this temporary

lulling of mind should last a thousand years, it will never

lead to total destruction of thought, which is what is called liberation from

birth and death.

The practitioner must therefore

be ever on the alert and inquire within as to who has this

experience, who realizes its pleasantness.

Without this inquiry he will go into a long trance or deep sleep

(yoga nidra).

Due to the absence of a proper guide at this stage of spiritual practice, many

have been deluded and fallen a prey to a false sense of liberation and only a

few have managed to reach the goal safely."

It is this last part that I would like to call attention to:

"Many have been deluded and

fallen a prey to a false sense of liberation and only a few have managed to

reach the goal safely."

Sri Ramana therefore points out

a trap.

He makes it clear that those who fall into this trap are many.

He also points out that those who get out of this trap are few.

Therefore, those extremely rare ones who are intent upon liberation now, in this

lifetime (who are almost as rare as rabbits with horns)

will certainly pay attention to such warnings.

Besides the obvious warning for

the individual not to be deluded

by some spiritual experience they have had into thinking that they are now

liberated, there is

another great lesson from this:

Many of those who are thus deluded into a false sense of liberation,

will begin teaching. Of course

they teach because they think they have something to teach since they think they

are liberated.

Since the number of those who

have been deluded into a false sense of liberation are many,

and those who have managed to

reach the goal safely are few, according to Sri Ramana, one can see that most of

the supposedly liberated sages are not liberated sages at all.
