Vinasa, destruction of the mind,

what does this really mean?

"The absorption of the mind attained through vicara

destroys ignorance, and reveals

the mithyatvam,

[or the only apparently real] nature of the mind.

The mind is enlightened and this

is referred to as vinasa,

destruction. It is not the destruction or annihilation

of the mind; it is the annihilation

of ignorance and the

notions born of ignorance.

The mind gains discrimination and

is able to evaluate

and comprehend the experiences of

the active world in

the light of self-knowledge.

The mind does not return to the

state of ignorance and

misconceptions.

Thoughts are natural and they will

always return.

Thoughts do not cover Atma. There

is no distance between

'I' and thoughts.

There is a mistake of equating

the thoughts with I

If I do not know who I am, this original mistake is

never corrected by removing the thoughts.

The mistake of taking the

thoughts for the Atma is the

cause of sorrow. Sorrow is a

result of the mixup between

the real and the apparently real

(mithya).

The reality given to the mind

is to be destroyed by knowing

the invariable Atma manifest in

all thoughts. Atma is not covered

by thoughts.

Atma cannot be covered by anything

except ignorance. It is always

manifest. I am Awareness, always

free from thoughts, inspite of thinking, and this is the darsana

of the One Self.

Thinking continues but it is known as mithya, apparent.

Mithya is not a problem--it is useful; mind is useful

and that is all there is to it."

Ramana Maharshi
