One of the popular Goddess in the Buddhist Pantheon especially in

Tibet. Tara means "star" an is said to have been born from the tears

of her mate, Avalokiteshvara. In one account all the creatures lament

the thought of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara abandoning them as he is

about to achieve nirvana. Hearing them lamenting, Bodhisattva

Avalokiteshvara sheds a tear of compassion for all beings. That tears

becomes Tara, who is thus associated to be the essence of compassion.

The feminine embodiment of compassion. In her many manifestationm she

can be peaceful or wrathful, depending on what best serves the need

at

hand. Tibetan Buddhism have many legands and mythological story

about

Tara. One legend describe her as The wive of the first great Tibetan

king. Another is the association of Tara with the origins of the

Tibetan people who believe emerged from the union of the monkey and

the rock orgress. She appears to be closely related to the Tibetan

people. In a sense she is like their queen and mother.

The oral Hinduism tradition gives an intriguing origin to the goddess

Tara. The legend begins with the churning of the ocean. Shiva has

drunk the poison that was created from the churning of the ocean,

thus

saving the world from destruction, but has fallen unconscious under

its powerful effect. Tara appears and takes Shiva on her lap. She

suckles him, the milk from her breasts counteracting the poison, and

he recovers. This myth is reminiscent of the one in which Shiva stops

the rampaging Kali by becoming an infant. Seeing the child, Kali's

maternal instinct comes to the fore, and she becomes quiet and nurses

the infant Shiva. In both cases, Shiva assumes the position of an

infant vis-à-vis the goddess.

The similarities in appearances between Kali and Tara are striking

and

unmistakable. They both stand upon a supine Shiva, identifiable here

by his damaru. Both goddesses are black. Both wear minimal clothing.

Both wear a necklace of severed human heads and a girdle of severed

human arms. Both have a lolling tongue, and blood oozes from their

mouths. Their appearances are so strikingly similar that it is easy

to

mistake one for the other. Indeed, they are often said to be

manifestations of each other; for example, in their thousand-name

hymns they share many epithets as well as having each others names.

Tara, for example, is called Kalika, Ugr-kali, Mahakali, and

Bhadra-kali.

Like Kali, furthermore, Tara in her Hindu context enjoys blood. In

her

hymn of a hundred names from the Mundamala-tantra, she is called She

Who Likes Blood, She Who Is Smeared with Blood, and She Who Enjoys

Blood Sacrifice. The Tara-tantra describes Tara's delight in both

animal and human blood but says that the latter is more pleasing to

her. The blood of devotees is to be taken from specified parts of the

body, such as the forehead, hands, breasts, head, or area between the

eyebrows; some of these areas may correspond to the different

chakras,

spiritual centers within the body. Tara is mostly being worshipped by

the left handed Tantric rites in which wine, meat an illicit sex play

an important role.

Tara inclusion in the Mahavidyas explain the fact that these

religions

: Buddhism and Taosim are the spin off from the Hinduism. Ramprasad

Sen, one of the great devotee of Kali Ma alive in the 18th century

often used the name Tara as a short reference to Kali :

1. " Most compassionate Ma Tara!… you who bear all beings

tenderly to truth!….your feet of wisdom are the only vessel that

can

sail across this terrible sea of birth and death" ( Please be

gracious

to the singer of this song!)

2. "…Godess Tara, my pangs of hunger for reality are becoming

unbearable…. Mother! Mother! Mother!…. you are the longing

and the

longed for! … you cannot refuse your child's earnest prayer!" (

Satisfy every level of our hunger!)

3. "….. At the moment death overcomes the boy of the lover, there

remains only the radiant space of Mother….. call out Ma Tara, Ma

Tara…. Her name will be ample provision for the mysterious

journey

beyond death that has already begun …" ( The agony of death will

vanish instantly"

4. "….. estoteric scriptures of the Goddess declare : 'Ma Tara is

utterly formless. .. she is clear light beyonf all form" ( Even the

deepest darkness of this world is simply her light.

All the above are extracted partially from Lex Hixon book : Mother of

the Universe, Vision of the Goddess and Tantric Hymns of enlightment.

A translated visionary hymns of Ramprasa Sen.

The Buddhist scriptures epicts Tara as being playful and humorous.

The

Hindu Tantric scriptures portrayed Tara as fierce and have an

identical appearance as Kali or Mahakali. IN the Hindu Mahavidyas,

especially in the context of ritual worship such as ritual of

subjugation, fierce goddess are being used . Tara us one of those

goddess being utilize for such rituals.

dormant, thesub-conscious and the unconscious minds remain active.

The opinion that thestate of sleep is the state of the sense of

vacuity is unacceptable to asubtle philosophical judgement, because

at that time the works ofboth the conscious and the subconscious

minds are done by the unconsciousmind. The real state of vacuity is

verily the state of utter destruction of themind, and so even

Savikalpa Samadhi (determinate suspension) is not a stateof vacuity.

Only the state of Nirvikalpa Samadhi (total suspension of themind) is

the state of vacuity. In this state of absolute vacuity thespiritual

waves of exhilaration that fill the unit-entity still continue toflow

and trail on for some time even after that state of vacuity, that

is,after the mind returns due to unserved samskaras (the

consequential reactivemomenta of one's past deeds). These very

trailing waves of exhilaration ofand joyous exuberance keep

reminding the 'mindful' sadhaka (the intuitionalpractitioner) that

his or her 'mindless' state had been one of absolutebliss.Shrii Shrii

Anandamurti---Subhasita Samgraha: Cult, Inference and PropensityThe

subject of today's discourse is "Cult, Inference and Propensity."The

path that leads or goads the aspirant unto Parama Purus'a

(CosmicConsciousness) is "cult" in the true spirit of the term. Where

the goal issomething finite, where the pabulum is something limited,

the path and themovement cannot be treated as cult. Spiritual

practice is based on cult:adherence to the doctrine of cult is

started and practised in the primordialphase by the 'doer I' of all

living beings. The 'doer I' keeps on thinking,"I am working, I am

eating, I am seeing, I do not know anything, I know somany things."In

living beings other than humans, the 'doer I' is not properly

expressed, and that is why they cannot establish their individual

identity or dospiritual practice. In certain animals like dogs and

monkeys, the 'doer I'is a bit more expressed or developed than in

other creatures. That is why inthe future they may also be in a

position to do this practice. You should also remember that this 'doer

I' performs spiritual practice withthe help of vital energy, not with

the help of positive or negativemicrovita (subtle cosmic emanations).

In fact, the vital energy acceleratesthe speed of spiritual progress.

Microvita, positive or negative, help theaspirant in his or her

movement, but the aspirant cannot utilise themicrovita. When the

'doer I' of the aspirant is goaded towards the SupremeEntity, it uses

the vital energy acquired through different quinquelementalfactors

(solid, liquid, luminous, aerial, ethereal), passing throughdifferent

planes of inferences, and through different propensities of thehuman

mind, without suppressing those propensities of the mind. The

questionof suppression, repression and oppression does not arise in

the realm ofspiritual cult. You are simply to maintain equilibrium

and equipoise -- thatis, you are to move maintaining proper

parallelism with the fundamentalpropensities of the human mind.So

spiritual practice is performed by the 'doer l' with the help of

energy,of so many energies which are converted into vital energy when

they passthrough the different planes of inferences. It is not proper

to think that this movement, this spiritual advancement, issomething

purely of individual character. No entity in this universe

existsindividually. Ours is a universal family. Each and every

entity -- livingand non-living, moving and non-moving -- helps others

in maintaining notonly their equilibrium, but also the equipoise of

the entire universe, notonly of this small planet Earth. We are to

move together with all.Even if an ant dies a premature death, it is

bound to jeopardize the balanceof the entire universe. Even if a 110

year old widow thinks that her lifehas no existential value on this

planet, that she is a mere burden tosociety, it is a defective idea.

No, even the life of such an old widowcontributes to maintaining the

balance of the universe. If such an oldperson dies prematurely, it is

bound to jeopardize the balance of theuniversal society. If people

think that they will make steady progress in the spiritual sphereeven

if the society goes to the dogs, they are mistaken. You who are

genuinespiritualists should practise spiritual cult thinking that by

doing so youwill become effective in maintaining the universal

balance. You must think,"I will personally move towards the supreme

desideratum, and at the sametime I will try to assist those who are

suffering from despair, thosesteeped in blind superstition and those

wallowing in poverty," Our family isuniversal, our abode is also

universal.Hararme pita'gaorii ma'ta'Svadesho bhuvanatrayam."The

Universal Father, Shiva, is our father. The Universal Mother,

Gaorii,is our mother. She is the causal matrix. And this universe is

our homeland."This spiritual cult is the only cult; others are not

cult, they are meredogma. If the cult is proper, if it is cult in the

true spirit of the term,it creates a sort of subtlety in one's mental

flow. Under suchcircumstances, we receive necessary help from

positive microvita (subtlecosmic emanations). This help that we

receive by dint of our spiritualpractices is composed of eight occult

powers. These powers are acquiredthrough cult. But while acquiring

these occult or so-called miraculouspowers we cannot do anything

without the help of positive microvita. Theseoccult powers are

an'ima', laghima', mahima', ishitva, vashvitva, praka'mya, prapti and

antarya'mitva. The entity who is endowed with all of them isknown as

"Iishvara" (the Cosmic Controller). An'ima' means "converting one's

psychic existence into a small point andthen transforming it into a

minimum entity." One may understand anything byentering into each and

every physical particle and becoming one with thedifferent waves of

expression, and emanation, by dancing with thewave-lengths of objects

or ideas. Unless and until one's very psychicexistence is converted

into a point, one cannot move or dance according tothe wavelengths of

objects or ideas. This occult power acquired throughpositive microvita

is called "an'ima".Laghima' makes the mind light, free from the

bondages of so manyliabilities. This carefree mind, freed from the

fetters of materialisticbondages, can understand and think properly.

So by dint of this occultpower, one may understand any idea, subtle

or crude, in the abstract realm.Unless you understand how much pain

and sorrow is accumulated in others'minds, how many tears well up in

their eyes, you cannot alleviate theirsorrows and sufferings. Through

laghima', you can acquire this particularpower to study others'

minds. The third one is mahima' or expansion of mind. With the help of

positivemicrovita, mind can be expanded. The radius of the mind may

cover the entireuniverse, and we may have ideas about different

subjects even withoutreading books and literature. And in this way,

too, we may feel our onenesswith the varied entities of this universe

- unity in variety, unity indiversity. By associating our benevolent

thoughts with each and everyentity, we will contribute to universal

progress and prosperity.Iishitva enables the spiritual aspirant to

guide other minds who suffer fromdifferent psychic ailments. So many

people in this world are crying in painand agony. So many miseries

and afflictions have paralysed human beingsphysically and mentally.

In leading this afflicted humanity to theirphysical progress and

psychic wellbeing, this occult power of iishitva willhelp you

tremendously. It can be achieved through positive microvita whichis

in turn acquired through the regular practice of cult. By sitting

idleand crying constantly one cannot achieve this.Vashvitva helps a

person to bring defective ideas, or people goaded bydefective ideas,

unto the path of supreme greatness. If people are to beguided towards

their definite progress, they will first have to be broughtunder one's

control. If such people work haphazardly and do not follow theright

path, they cannot be expected to reach the state of welfare. So,

ifyou really want to help people, you will have to bring them under

controland then direct them along the right path to their goal. This

occult powercan be achieved through positive microvita.Praka'mya or

the right mode of thinking aimed at promoting universalwelfare,

brings light to the entire universe. Through this occult

power, spiritual aspirants acquire what is needed to serve the entire

world.Pra'pti means helping oneself and helping the souls of so many

people toacquire and be benefited by the grace of the Supreme. And the

eighth one is antarya'mitva -- to be able to enter within

theectoplasmic or endoplasmic structures of others, and thereby to

know thepains and pleasures, the hopes, aspirations and longings of

others to guidethem properly. It is somewhat like the transmigration

of souls. Regardingthis eighth occult power, spiritual cult alone

will not suffice -- itrequires the special grace of Parama Purus'a

(Cosmic Consciousness). There is yet another occult power -- the power

of omniscience, to beall-knowing. This power of omniscience cannot be

achieved only through thepractice of cult, nor with the help of

positive microvita -- one must reachthe height of devotion and

achieve the grace of the Supreme. Otherwise, evenif people dash their

heads against a wall, they still cannot acquireomniscience with the

help of positive microvita. And above all occult powers is the supreme

knowledge - ensconcement inParama Purus'a (Cosmic Consciousness).

This is not only a sort ofomniscience, rather it elevates the

aspirant to be one with the SupremeCognitive Faculty. Of course,

those who are already endowed with devotionwill automatically acquire

this power.Bhakti bhagavato seva',

bhaktipremasvaru'pin'iiBhaktira'nandaru'pa'ca, bhakti bhaktasya

jiivanam."Devotion means service unto the Lord. Devotion is of the

nature ofselfless love. Devotion is bliss incarnate. Devotion is the

very life of thedevotee."Devotion means working in the service of the

Supreme according to theDivine's satisfaction. Without devotion, one's

mind cannot rise beyond thepituitary gland. If one wants to take the

mind beyond that, one needsdevotion. So the supreme spiritual

progress of microcosms is never possiblewithout devotion. If you have

devotion, you can call Parama Purus'a to you;the Supreme Cosmic

Consciousness will certainly come to you, rather theSupreme must come

to you. For this, you may or may not have anything else, but if you

have devotion, you have everything. By dint of that, one

attainsParama Purus'a, one becomes identified with the Supreme. This

is the summumbonum of human life. Regarding Prema or selfless love,

it is said:Samyaung masrn'ito sha'nto mamatva'tishaya'unkitahBha'va

sa' eva sa'ndra'tma' budhaeh prema nigadyate"The attitude which makes

the mind smooth and placid, and radiant with thedeepest love for the

Lord, is called "bha'va". Wise people call this "prema"or "divine

love".Prema is the attraction for Parama Purus'a overcoming the

attraction for allother finite objects. Those who are endowed with

such divine love are boundto receive the grace of Parama Purus'a --

they need not worry about it. Ifthey practise the spiritual cult

regularly, positive microvita are sure tohelp them. Those who arouse

devotion through action and knowledge arecertain to attain the grace

of Parama Purus'a. This grace need not be hugein quantity -- even a

wee bit of it will be enough.Mahatkrpayaeva bhagavatkrpa' lesha'd

va'."One can attain the supreme stance by the blessings of the

exalted ones, aswell as a wee bit of Macrocosmic grace."Only such

people endowed with the grace of the Supreme are in the bestposition

to render maximum service to this universe. While practisingspiritual

cult, it should be remembered that aspirants must not practise inorder

to acquire these occult powers. The goal of spiritual practice is

torealise the Supreme Entity. To search for any other object is

wrong. Occultpowers are just like the dust on the roadside. The

attraction to ParamaPurus'a is the most valuable object -- all else

is only the dust of theearth. Hence the spiritual aspirant must not

run after these inconsequentialoccult powers, although while

practicing spiritual cult those powers maydevelop. You must not forget

that all your achievements must maintain adjustment withthe main

propensities of mind, and in the process of adjustment, all

theseeight types of occult powers present themselves to the spiritual

aspirant.Sa'dhana' (spiritual practices) starts in the plane of

physicality and movestowards the physico-psychic plane. This first

phase of sa'dhana' isperformed by the 'doer I'. Then from the

physico-psychic plane to the purepsychic plane, and from the pure

psychic plane to the psycho-spiritualplane -- this portion of

sa'dhana' is done by the 'knower I'. In the finalstage of sa'dhana'

(spiritual practices), the pure spiritual phase, none ofthese can

help the spiritual aspirant; even positive and negative

microvitacannot function above the psycho-spiritual level, beyond the

pituitarygland. No vibration is of any help. In such circumstances,

finally you willhave to depend on the grace of the Supreme and

nothing else. One is obligedto declare, Brahmakrpa' hi kevalam, that

is, "the grace of Parama Purus'a iseverything".Everything in this

universe is created, everything survives and everythingultimately

dissolves in and through Him. Regarding this Supreme Entity,

thescriptures say:Yato vishvam' samudhu'tam'Yena ja'tainca

tis'thatiYasmin sarva'ni liiyantaJineyam tadbrama laks'anach"Out of

grace of the Supreme, the universe has emerged;due to His grace, the

universe preserves its existence;and because of His grace, everything

will finally dissolve in Him."So the final word in the realm of

spirituality is the Supreme grace ofParama Purus'a. Intelligent

people will understand this supreme truth andmove accordingly. It is

true not only in the physical level, not only in thephysico-psychic

level, not only in the psychic level, not only in thepsycho-spiritual

level, but in all levels. Finally, whatever you say or think,

everything is finally embedded in thegrace of Parama Purus'a. The

sooner this fundamental truth is realised, thebetter it will be for

all.Shrii Shrii AnandamurtiD.M.C.A'nandanagar,4th June 1989---Other

Works: The Rule of RationalityThis solar system is sufficient in its

potentiality to maintain, nourish, feed and supply material for

existence not only to human beings but to allits living beings.Due to

our folly or undeveloped thinking, we could not give proper

solutionsto the problems of material existence. Now our planet is

just like a hiddentreasure. We have to utilise this hidden treasure

for the maintenance andsustenance of all the living beings of this

universe. This earth of ours is passing through a critical juncture.

The solution isof immediate necessity. It brooks no delay. That is

why our PROUT(PROgressive Utilisation Theory) is to be propagated

throughout thisuniverse, especially on this planet of ours. You

should chalk out programmesfor its materialisation and implementation

within a short period. You know, economic life, political life and

social life are not everythingfor living beings and human beings.

They have also got a mental world and aspiritual world. For

development and progress in the mental and spiritualworlds, our

Neo-humanistic ideology is to be propagated everywhere.Spiritual life

controls all other arenas of human life. The physical body is made of

the quinquelemental factors (solid, liquid, luminous, aerial,

ethereal). For this, quinquelemental science is to beapplied to cure

certain ailments associated with the physical body. Toremove

physico-psychic ailments, bioscience is to be developed utilising

thenew theory of Microvita (subtle emanations). Microvita may

function aspositive or negative physico-microvita. (Spiritual

microvita should also beutilised.) Microvita theory should be

properly utilised. There is also cultural life. There are certain

common and natural tendenciesin human life. Those tendencies are of

either a degenerating or an exaltingnature, that is, they are either

of a depraving or an elevating nature. Weshould encourage the

elevating tendencies and discourage the depravingtendencies. In

certain portions of this world, depraving tendencies such

aspornography exist. Protesting will not stop or check it unless we

also dosomething positive to check it. If we do something positive,

it will createa new stir in the human mind. Pornography and other

depraving tendencieswill be completely discouraged and checked. That

will be our course ofaction. We have to create new literature, new

books, new music, new songs... we have to create a cultural stir.

These are our immediate duties. Wehave to chalk out a programme and

actaccordingly.Innocent human beings are at the mercy of devouring

demons. The animals arealso at the mercy of human demons. Even the

plants are at the mercy of humandemons. These demons destroy forests

without creating new ones. They createnew deserts. There is folly in

their thinking as well as their economics. You know, 300 years ago

there was no desert in South America. And 150 yearsago there was no

desert in India. Innocent human beings are at the mercy ofhuman

demons. We have to solve this problem. We must solve this

problemthrough PROUT, Neo-Humanism, Microvita, art, literature,

songs, music andspiritual Sa'dhana' (spiritual practices). These are

the panacea to solveall these problems. There may be a shortage of

petroleum. But elements for creating petroleumare available in the

world. So synthetic petroleum can be produced. We willbe able to do

this. What we want is the rule of rationality. Human society is one

andindivisible. Apparently there is heterogeneity but in essence

there ishomogeneity. For instance, in the Middle East there are

Muslims, Jews,Christians, Semites and Blacks. But they all belong to

the same supremerace - they are all the progeny of the Supreme

Progenitor. This is what thespiritual philosophy of A'nanda Ma'rga

says. Only due to dogmas, peoplethink in terms of heterogeneity.

There is only one ideology in the worldwhich is not only

all-embracing but also all-pervading.Both the problems and their

solutions have been pointed out. Now it is ourbounden duty to carry

this message to all nooks and corners of this world. The wind is

blowing in our favour. We should carry the message to each andevery

particle of marrow of this living world.Shrii Shrii Anandamurti31

August 1987Calcutta---Acoustic Roots: unaUna is the acoustic root of

the dambha vrtti - propensity of vanity. Thepopular story goes that

the great sage Vashis'tha, travelled to China tolearn the Chinese

school of Tantra. In China, he learnt the use of una inthe utterance

of Tantric mantras, and introduced it in India on his return. In all

the dialects of the Indo-Chinese languages, even in Tibetan,Laddhaki,

Sherpa', Mampa', etc we see that una is used extensively. It issaid

that Vashis'tha learnt that una is the acoustic root of vanity. It

alsosaid that he first learnt the Tara cult of the Buddhist Vamacar

Tantra fromChina. Since then in Buddhist Tantra, the Tara cult has

been trifurcated:Ugra Tara or Bajra Tara is worshipped in India;

Niila Tara or NiiolaSarasvati is worshipped in Tibet (Tibbata or

kim'purus'a Bhasa), andBhra'marii Tara (Krsna Tara) is worshipped in

China. It is believed that in the post Buddhist period Bajra Tara or

Ugra Tara wasaccepted as the Tara deity in Varn'ashrama Dharma

(medieval Hinduism).Today, people's names such as Ta'ra Das,

Tarapada, Tara Kumar, etc are quitecommon. It is generally accepted

that the Niila Tara or Niila Sarasvati ofTibet was later converted

into thegoddess Sarasvati by the supporters of Varn'ashrama

Dharma. The acoustic root of Bhajra Tara of India and Niila Tara of

Tibet is aem'.The black-coloured Bramarii Tara of China is accepted

as the Goddess Kali inVarn'ashrama Dharma. Their acoustic root is the

same - kriim' (kasymbolising Karya Brahma * plus ra symbolising the

luminous factor).* Expressed Brahma (God) or Effect Brahma.Shrii

The letter "Ta" is the seed word of dullness. The root verb "Tare"

suffixed by "Da" becomes "Tra"which means "That which liberates,"

iethe spiritual practice which liberates the aspirant fromdullness or

animality of the static force and expands his or her self is the

Tantra Sadhana. So there cannot be any spiritualpractice without

Tantra. Tantra is the Sadhana.

The word tantra and the word Tara have the same root which

means to Liberate. To worship Tara is to practice tantra, and

to practise tantra is to worship Tara.

Very Nice and thank you.

We have earlier ( in the old club ) a discussion with regards to

Tara. ( I must try to repost them as soon as possible )

Tara is one of the Mahavidyas. The second and can be considered one

of the adi ( Primodal )mahavidyas, first of which is Kali and the

third is Lalitha ( tripura_sundari. Our goddess of the week ). This

suggest that Tara, Kali and Lalitha occupies a high place in the

group, and she like them represents a complete vision of reality.

yes eve great explanation... one who 'saves' and liberates that is

our mother TARA...

similarly tantra shastra also does the same - 'liberate and expand'

consciousness!

congratulations on your completing the marathon chanting of the

names of mahalakshmi! great feat!

love
