Guest guest
The great Gaayatri Mantra of the Rig Veda invoked the god Savitr, the Sun. In later tradition, the power (shakti) embodied in the mantra came to be identified as the Goddess Gaayatri. "The mantra itself has been much imitated, or rather re-created, with various other deities, male and female, being substituted for Savitr," notes the scholar C. Mackenzie Brown in his commentary on the great Devi Gita. The Devi Gita itself includes such a "Devi Gaayatri" at Chapter 1, Verse 48, with Mahalakshmi as the substituted deity. Brown calls this adjustment a "typical Shakta recreation," and the classic Devi Gita commentator Nilakantha adds, "Repetition of this Devi Gaayatri not only prepares the devotee for meditation, but also invites the Goddess to appear in person before the reciter." So here is the "Devi Gaayatri," for all of you hardcore Shaktas out there: We know You as Mahalakshmi, we meditate on you as the Shakti of all. May the Goddess inspire this knowledge and meditation of ours. Aum Maatangyai Namahe
