Guest guest
There have been a lot of words said here about Sati and the business of chucking herself on the fire. I totally agree that when a guy dies his missus should not be made to jump in there with him, in fact would she? if the idea were not already put in there from a teaching such as this? It may be that in some lady the action would naturally arise to do such a thing but if she were really at that level then she would know that her hubby had not gone and left her anyway. These stories were a way of getting across internal messages , much as the parables of Jesus, to folk who had a strong intuitive side but whose intellect was lacking a bit. The lady saw the truth of who her husband was, the Emptiness, and to be one with him for eternity she dived into that which is beyond duality. Her dad represents the opinions of the worldly who do not understand the Divine form, which Sati obviously did. When One stands upon that last threshold where the next step leads to Emptiness even the words of the one who you hold in highest esteem, the guru, are of no reassurance. You are on your own in this one , no decision, no choice. This is what is seen being represented here by this story of Sati, beautiful in the sense that the sacrifice of "I", the self, dies in the flame of Love and horrific in that those whose understanding of this story is incomplete would demand this of a woman. The Lady is to be respected and the sooner this is really known then the sooner the long needed changes in out society will come about. Make no mistake SHE is bringing it about.
