This story reminds me of an early part of the story of Psyche and Cupid. Perhaps you already know this story -- it comes from the writings of Lucius Apuleius, an ancient Roman who was a devotee of Isis. Psyche was a beautiful young woman of mortal family. After her kindred abandoned her on a mountain, she found her way to a miraculous palace, where she was welcomed by the voices of invisible beings. They advised to prepare to meet her destined husband. That night, he came to her in darkness in her bedchamber in the palace and embraced her as his wife. But he warned her that she would lose her happiness if she tried to find out what he looked like. Eventually she broke the rule, by bringing a lamp into the chamber while he was sleeping. She saw that her husband was none other than the winged god of love, Cupid himself. He woke up and flew away. After that, Psyche fell into the power of Cupid's mother, Venus, who was jealous of Psyche's beauty. Venus set Psyche a series of apparently impossible tasks. First she had to separate a large pile of different sorts of seeds that had been thoroughly mixed. Then she had to collect golden fleece from a flock of sheep who had the power to kill human beings who annoyed them. Next she had to fill a vessel with water from the centre of a huge waterfall. Finally Venus commanded Psyche to go the land of the dead, and bring back to Venus a box of beauty from Proserpine, the queen of that country. Psyche received unexpected help, and completed all the tasks Venus had set her. Then Venus relented, and Cupid and Psyche were reunited, and Psyche was made a goddess. Curiosity can indeed be dangerous. It can throw love itself into a state of crisis. But that is not always the end of the story. Om Shantih, Colin.
