Guest guest
dear jk, i thought you might like this.... Durga: The word DURGA consists of five parts D+U+R+G+A. The sound 'D' stands for DAITYA - ASURA or demon tendencies like anger, ego attachment, greed etc, destruction of these DAITYA VRITIes. The sound 'U' stands for VIGHANA NASHAKA - destroyer of obstacles The sound 'R' stands for ROGA NASHAKA - destroyer of diseases The sound 'G' stands for PAAPA NASHAKA - destroyer of sins The sound 'A' stands for BHAYA NASHAKA - destroyer of fears Thus, DURGA sound is destroyer of all malefics. (http://jyotishsoft.hypermart.net/dharma/devi.htm) thus, durga means 'durgati nashini' - one who destroys the demonic tendencies in man/woman. aldo, dura means -the fort - one who protects us like a fort!!! love , "jkala108" <jkala108> wrote: > Divine mother > > Oh great mother > Reliever of difficulties > Reliever of sufferings > In remembering your name I become pure > In meditating on your form I experience immortal bliss > As your child I suckle the nectar of your wisdom > Black mother relieve me of the sufferings of this birth > May your name be ever on my tongue > Compassionate mother this is my prayer > > Om kali durgai namo-namah
Guest guest
also, let me add... each animal represents certain qualities --- take for instance the 'buffalo' - it is always lying in a pool of muddy water - lazing around and full of inertia... durga mata is described as 'mahisasuramardini' the one who destroys the demon with a face like mahisa (buffalo) here, mahisa stands for 'tamo guna' the quality of inertia and laziness ... our durga mata hepls us to conquer the tamo guna of laziness and inertia! as nora has so eloquently pointed out all these animals are symbolic... swan stands for discrimination... how to seperate truth from untruth, good from evil, fact from fiction peacock stands for vanity, pride and arrogance snake represents the 'eternal' -timeless and unchanging buffalo represents inertia and laziness sow stands for 'envy' or matsarya parrot represents 'knoweldge' or the vedas mouse stands for the 'ego' eagle stands for ambition so on and so forth!!! enjoy !!!!
