Guest guest
Hello group, I'm new to Devi worship and still ignorant about many of the most fundamental aspects of the practice. I am enjoying listening in on your conversations without being able to contribute. I do have two questions for you..... I recently picked up a couple of CDs of chants with which I am unfamiliar. I am wondering if someone could tell me where to find out about them or perhaps tell me something about them. What is the Devi Sahastranamavali? The second disc I stumbled upon is called "Namastotram: Shiv & Kali" It has a Shiv Sahastranamavali and Kali Sahastranamavali on it with two Aartis. Should these discs be used for meditation? Are they meant to accompany specific ritual actions? Are they lists of the divine names? Readings of sacred texts? I would appreciate any information or directions to furthur resources.... Guest guest
namaskar dear wilson, welcome aboard! we are very delighted to have you here in our humble abode dedicated to the goddess. sahastranamvali generally means 1008 (in some cases just 1000) names of the god/goddess - in devi sahastranamavali, all of goddesses's 1008 (or 1000) names are recited - each name is full of meaning and potency - it is said god and goddesses are 'stotra priya' meaning they love to hear from bhaktas the 'glorification' of their names...thus, we have vishnu shasaranama, sree lalita sahasaranama etc.... listening and chanting these names are very beneficial- it is called 'phalashruti' meaning 'fruits of such recitation... for example, if one recites sree lalita sahasaranama with faith and devotion , one is 1)cleansed of one's sins 2) one's wants and desires are fulfilled 3) gives protection from enemies 4) serious ailmenta are cured 5) one is bestowed with prosperity and progeny 6) and even one is blessed with literary and poetic abilities apart from all this, if one chants regularly with yearning and real devotion without any desire for worldly fulfillments , will attain the knowledge of 'brahman' and release from samsara ( the cycle of births and deaths.) personally, when i meditate i do not like to listen to amy music or cd as there i like to lose myself totally in the contemplation of the mantra and be transported to another realm altogether!!! in fact, i turn my t.v off, my telephone is off the hook....etc... the only thing i have in front of me is a burning candle and the smell of incence! yes, you can play aartis while performing worship to the deities ! but, wilson, this is a great start!!! in nine forms of worship, 'shravanam' (listening) , chanting (kirtanam) are all considered very beneficial!!!! on another note, you may want to start reading devi mahatmya ; the crystalization of the goddess tradition, by thomas b.coburn.... it is very auspicious to read this text during vasant navratri... wilson, you will be surprised how *devi* herself will guide and lead you on the path!!!!! once you place yourself at the lotus feet of the divine mother, she lifts you up and places you on her 'lap' and takes care of you like her own child!!! best wishes, > I'm new to Devi worship and still ignorant about many of the most fundamental > aspects of the practice.
