In the heart of the city ( situated 47 miles south-west of chennai on

the banks of the vegavathi river) where a great many of its temple

are located stands Kamakshi- Amman. The Striking structure with its

large paved courtyard and famed golden gopuram, contains a depiction

of the goddess as a Yantra before whom a chakra is placed for worship.

The Kamakshi-Amman also contains a statue of the great philosopher,

Adi-Shankaracharya, who is worshipped there as a god. He brought

about a revival of enthusiasm for the declining worship of the

presiding goddess by apparentl returning her power to her. This he is

said to have done by placing before her another cakra with the Ashta

Lakshmi cut into it at the cardinal points. This is suppose to have

renewed her energy. The temple estate also possesses the vital thank

of purifying water and two small shrines, one to Vishnu, the other to

Annapurna ( the goddess of food and plenty )

The temple come alive every february-march when on the ninth lunar

day of this month a great chariot festival is held and Parvati is

ritually bathed and adorned for the journey to Sivan.

I would like to add that Kamakshi is the goddess of

Haadi Vidya tradition of Sri Vidya with Lopamudra wife

and Guru of Agasthya as its rishi.

The mantra is Hasakahalahreem Hasakalahreem
