Guest guest
Ah! Dursson. Welcome back. So! did you catch/kill any demon lately ? Just love reading your post, bring smiles to my face. I read this somewhere, and I cant remember which books. It is said that the NavDurga not only represent the different stages of the goddess but also an extension of woman's life cycle. Anybody knows about this? Opps.... Bhakta is for Man, what do you call female devotee : Bhakti? ( I couldnt believe it, but i really forgot) Chumki going to "fire" me if I dont address the durga female devotee. Guest guest
In kannada its bhakthalu, or bhakte where the Lu and e denotes the femine gender. But I think Bhaktha itself is gender agnistic and so it should not matter. - "nora55_1999" <nora55_1999 <> Wednesday, April 24, 2002 9:24 AM To all Durga Bhakta Ah! Dursson. Welcome back. Guest guest
In Malayalam both male and female are Bhakta. it is also male=bhakthan and female= Bhaktha. I think we matrilinial people are more concious that gender makes no difference in Bhakthi. *smile* (just letting you know i am still here) Kochu --- Seshadri <dksesh wrote: > In kannada its bhakthalu, or bhakte where the Lu and > e denotes the femine > gender. Guest guest
In Kannada we generally dont make that distinction either. The plural is used to cover up the gender requirements. - Seshadri. - "sankara menon" <kochu1tz <> Wednesday, April 24, 2002 4:22 PM Re: To all Durga Bhakta In Malayalam both male and female are Bhakta. it is also male=bhakthan and female= Bhaktha. Guest guest
dear sesh, normally - bhaktas -denote 'devotees' - since nora , raised that question - i was just giving a politically correct answer that 'bhaktin' denotes a female form of bhakta in hindi - that's all ? in tamil, also,m we call a male devotee 'bhaktan' and a female devotee a 'bhaktai' - but really, can we move beyond all these ? love. ps- why everything has become such a gender issue lately from 'bhraman' to bhakta? all of a suuden? lol!!! smiles!!! Guest guest
Nora wrote: >Opps.... Bhakta is for Man, what do you call female devotee : Bhakti? >( I couldnt believe it, but i really forgot) The word bhakta is in origin a Sanskrit word -- the past participle of the verb _bhaj_. in the Sanskrit language its feminine form is almost the same, but with a long "a" sound at the end. A long "a" sounds like the "a" in the English word "father", whereas a short "a" is more like the "u" in the English word "cup". You can show the long vowel in writing by putting a horizontal line over the top of the "a" (which I can't do in email) or by writing 'aa' or even 'A'. The feminine names Durga and Kali have long vowel sounds also. So, if you are going to write the feminine form as "bhaktaa" (or "bhaktA"), then in order to be consistent you would need to also write "Durgaa" (or "durgA") and "Kaalii" or ("kAlI"). Guest guest
Maa, I was not correcting. Only describing my observation in kannada. In tamil we also call a person bhakthar etc....not that its important to me. I was only saying we also do this. - "adi_shakthi16" <adi_shakthi16 <> Wednesday, April 24, 2002 11:13 PM Re: To all Durga Bhakta dear sesh, normally - bhaktas -denote 'devotees' - since nora , raised that question - i was just giving a politically correct answer that 'bhaktin' denotes a female form of bhakta in hindi - that's all ? in tamil, also,m we call a male devotee 'bhaktan' and a female devotee a 'bhaktai' - but really, can we move beyond all these ? love. ps- why everything has become such a gender issue lately from 'bhraman' to bhakta? all of a suuden? lol!!! smiles!!!
