MADURAI: The International Tamil Conference, which concluded here on

Sunday, requested Tamil Nadu government to make Tamil compulsory at

"all levels".

A resolution passed at the conference, held by the International Tamil

Integration Society, wanted the government to formulate an act in this

regard.

It urged the government to make Tamil medium compulsory in nursery

schools in the state. Tamizh Vazhipadu (worship in Tamil) should also

be made compulsory in the temples, and Tamil should be widely used in

courts and government offices.

Another resolution adopted at the general body meeting of the

conference demanded that the Centre declare Tamil as a "classical

language" and Tamil treatise "Thirukural" as a national literary work.

The conference also condemned making Hindi compulsory in central

government undertakings, including in the Life Insurance Corporation

and banks, and asked the government to stop it.

Recalling that late chief minister M G Ramachandran had allocated a

site for a "Tamil Sangam" in the city, it said the government should

start it without delay.

The conference urged the state and union governments to do whatever

possible to remove the "sufferings and sorrow" of the Sri Lankan

Tamils.

Earlier, about 100 Tamil scholars were given "Tamizh Pani Semmal"

award for their service to the cause of Tamil.

thanx db for posting this interesting new item.

Yes, tamil is my mother tomgue so naturally i have a soft corner for

that lamguage...

Jananii Janambhoomicha swargatapi gariyasi

one's mother and motherland are dearer than heaven!!!

to this impressive list, i would add the mother tongue also!!!

here i wpold like to reproduce a verse from pankatali's web site!!

you know, very well tha our sufi shakta bhakta is very fond of tamil

literature... (in fact, the ladt time i spoke to him he wanted to

translate 'abirami anthadi' into english. where is he, my friend!(

how i miss him in this forum- the one who gave us such beautiful

presentation like the saundarya lahari....)

here it how it goes...

ônkal iTaivant uyarntôr tolaviLanki ênkoli ñâlat tiruLakarrum,

ânkavarruL minnêr taniyâli venkatiron rânaiyatu tannêr ilâta tamil.

There are two things born from mountains, shining so brilliantly that

the great bow down, driving darkness from earth circled by roaring

waters. One is the flaming sun, single wheel bright as lightning, the

other is Tamil that has no comparison!!!

..

—from the taNTiyalankârum

here the poet says two thing are really worthy of admiration - one is

the 'flaming sun' shining brightly like lightning from behind the

mountains and the other is the beautiful language tamil- there is no

comparison to these two!!!

that is why tamil is called "sundara tamil" *beautiful tamil

and lord muruga (the mountain god in palani, tamilnadu) is called

tamizh kaduvul (tamil god) worshipped by sri lankans and people from

tamil nadu.

**********************************************************************

on another note, i would like to mention to to you about the Golden

Lotus Tank in the Madurai Meenakshi temple, madurai, tamil nadu...

"The area of this tank is 1 acre. It's length is 240' and breadth

165'. The salient feature of this tank is that it is older than the

temple. It is said that the "Moola Lingam" was found in this tank by

Dhananjaya. Statues of Dhananjeya and Kulasekara Pandiya are carved

on the pillar in the northern side of the tank. Since, the Petals of

the Lotus Flowers in the tank appeared gold, this tank was named

as "Potramarai Kulam" (which means Golden Lotus Tank).

The Most notable feature of this tank is that fishes and frogs are

not seen in this tank. This tank has very main role in promoting

tamil scholars. The Greatest Composition in Tamil - "Thirukkural" by

Thiruvalluvar was released on this corridor of this Tank. 1330 kurals

are inscribed on the white marbles in the southern side of this tank.

In those days, Tamil scholars used to throw their poetic works into

this tank. It was believed that if they float in water, they were

good ones and were accepted by "SangaPalakai". (means the society of

tamil poets)

Statues of tamil scholars belonging to the last tamil 'Sangam' are

carved in the pillars situated in the southern side of the tank. To

the south-west corner of the tank is the "Sevantheeswarar Temple". It

is a Shiva temple built in the 16th century. Standing at this spot,

one can have the beautiful look of all the towers of Meenakshi Amman

Temple. "

**********************************************************************

is it a wonder then that a language like 'tamil' should be worshipped

in a lpace where sri meenakshi amman herself is worshipped? after

all, mother meenakshi is also an incarnation of matanngi , the

goddess of learning and fine arts?

**********************************************************************

db, if you ever plan to visit tamil nadu, please be sure to visit

madurai! you would love it!!!

love
