Guest guest
When we were growing up in india, my father always instructed me and my siblings to touch the feet of our mother on all festive occasions - in fact, before any major event -like going to appear in final exams in high school or moving away from home to a college dorm and when i got 'engazed' (to be married) and then finally leaving for usa to make it my place of permanent residence.... FATHER always used to say " you need mother's blessings; she is the one who carried you in the womb for 9 months." Although i pretended to understand the sentiment behind this request , i never fully understood it until some years ago when i became a single parent by a decree of fate , it is then i realized that it was my mother's blessings that helped me to cross all the stormy seas ! she was the one who carried me on her shoulders during my years of struglle. My mother is still alive , over 80 ywears of age, - a pillar of strength and courage to all my brothers and sisters ! she taught us so many valuable things over the years just by example- a model of infinite patience, tolerance, forbearance, compassion, kindness, and above all 'nurturer and a nourisher.' The Vedas declare "matru devo bhava." Literally translated it means, "worship your mother as Gos" YES, god can be worshipped as your own mother or your own mother can be worshipped as god. are they contradictory? no, not at all. rather, when you learn to worship all the qualities of 'motherhood' in your own womb mother, you are also simeltaneously able to transfer the same loving qualities of motherhood to the form of the goddess. your own mother is the manifestation of the goddess - in fact all mothers - all women - all of god's creation are manifestastions of the divine mother... the Devi-mahatmiyam says... Vidyah samastah tava devi bhedah striyah samastah sakala jagatsu "O DEVI, all types of knowledge are Thine own diverse forms; all women in the world are thy diverse manifestations." when you worship your mother, what do you worship ? her physical form? ... not really- it is the qualities or the attributes- the loving tenderness, the compassion, the unconditional love etc... When you learn to worship your own mother as god, it becomes much easier to worship god/ess as a mother because who is god/ess but your own mother multipled billion times? Your own mother reaches out to you with two hands. Our Durga MatA reaches out to you with hundreds of hands. you are able to rest you head on your own mother's lap when you want comfort? but how many heads rest on Durga mata's LAP when they need some reassurance? such is the divine mother's benevelence! My favorite poet Shakespeare says " Kindness in women , not their beauteous looks, shall win my love." To all the mothers in this forum i say this- 'cultivate all those qualities of motherhood you admire in Devi, THE DIVINE MOTHER. qualities of compassion, kindness, mercy, tenderness , tolerance, understanding, strenth, self-reliance, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. GRACE, and above all infinite patience" - these are the attributes of motherhood - motherhood is synonymous with service- self-less sevice. True, charity begins at home but it need not end up there- it can extend beyond the four walls of your house. A concept of universal motherhood - as mother teresa has taught us... To be aleader is difficult; to be amother is easy... In India, when i was staying in madras, every morning the milkman would bring his cow Lakshmi and a calf to our doorstep - right before our eyes, the milkman used to 'milk' the cow - but before he did that, he would make the 'calf' feed at the mother's breast - when i used to ask the milkman why he did that, he wouls smile and reply "amma, after the feeding the calf, the cow's breats would be overflowing with milk and it will be easier for me to get a better supoply of milk for my customers." great logic!!! yes guys, once the milk starts flowing , it never stops!!! so, let the milk of kindness overflow from your bosom towards one and all - let the divine mother shine through us all- "so many gods, so many creeds, so many paths that wind and wind, while just the art of being *kind* is all the sad world needs!" folks, wishing you all a wonderful Happy Mother's day!!!! overflow
