mY GURUDEVA was a 'tantrik' guru and his ishtadevata was none other

than the divine mother KALI MA.

oNCE while chatting on instant messaging i told my gurudeva that from

childhood i was afraid of mother kali - I was always frightened by

her appearance- her weapons, blodd-smeared portruding tongue, the

garland of skulls around her neck, her sishevelled hair and her

nskedness! in other words, i was telling my gurudeva how the 'ugra'

rupa was so frightening... i also told him how i liked the 'sowwmya'

bhava of sree durga mata!

Gurudeva replied with a smile "MOther, many people are afraid of Kali

ma - and do you know why? "

I replied , " not really. Exept she has such a frightenning

appearance."

Gurudeva repiled, "No, mother! most people are afraid of Kali because

she takes away your 'ego.' " Then my gurudeva went on to

explain, "Mother, WHAT IS MOST DEAR TO A MAN'S HEART? his ego! Losing

one's identity. We are afraid of mmerging with the DIvine! This is

the greatest fear."

Gurudeva further explained, " Yes, man has other material fears too.

Fear of losing a job, fear of losing a house due to foreclosure, fear

of a car being possesse due to non-payment of car loan, fear of

losing one's loved one, fear of getting cancer..... so on and so

fort.... these fears are endless ... but ***the fear of ego death is

the worst fear."

Then my beloved gurudeva went on to explain one by one the symbolism

of Kali... 1)HER DARKNESS 2) HER PORTRUDING TONGUE 3) THE CORPSE

LYING UNDER HER FEET 4) HER GARLAND OF SKULLS AND 5) HER WEAPONS ....

SLOWLY, IT DAWNED ON ME THERE WAS NOTHING MORE TO FEAR. for our

divine mother removes fear with her abhaya mudra. Her sword only

slays the 'ego'! the garlandv of skulls represent the letters of the

sanskrit alphabet... mother is all 'sound' and no 'fury'(shabda

dwani) AND HER PORTRUDING BLOOD SMEARED TINGUE IS ONLY drinking up

the lust in all of us... Her disshevelled hair represents a 'free and

independent' spirit etc...

" O mother, ever blissful as thou ART!

DO NOT DEPRIVE thy worthless child of bliss !

my mind knows nothing but thy lotus feet

the king of death scowls at me terribly

tell me, mother, what shall i say to him?

as is a man's madness, so is his feeling of love

>as is a man's feeling of love, so is his gain

and faith is the root of all

this world, O mother is thy madhouse!

what can i say of all thy setting aside , thine elephant, thou roamest

about on foot

putting all thy gems and pearls , O

self-willed mother,

thou does adorn THY COMELY NECK WITH

A GARLAND OF HUMAN HEADS

now thou must rescue Ramprasad out of the forest of the world. "

worshipping kali leads to ultimate form of 'renunciation' ! renounce

all wordly desires, give up lust and merge with her divine form!

jai mahakali!

Jai gurudeva!!!
