References to SriLankan historical worship or Forests....Vana Durga The geographical location of Kandy was very important in creating a natural defense strategy. The city was built in a valley surrounded by three mountain ranges: Udawattakele to the east, the Hantana range on one side and the Bahiravakanda range on the other. The river Mahaveli, flowing towards the north-west, turns back on itself towards the south-west, forming a triangular boundary. Four types of forts were built. They were Sthala Durga (Fort built on land), Jala Durga (Fort surrounded by water), Giri Durga (Hill fort) and Vana Durga (Fort built in the midst of forest).
