Guest guest
I was wondering if anyone here knew of a good version of the Upanishads in English? I have tried reading the editions translated by Max Mueller, but find that I really cannot seem to get much from them. Any ideas?? As for Maatangi, I myself am a musician and would be interested possibly in devotion to this Goddess for her musical aspects. The concept of a Tantric Saraswati is great and not so overwhelmingly "white light" as is the case with most deities large amounts of people get a hold of! Sad thing is, aside from Kinsleys book on the Mahavidyas I have not come across much info on them and I haven't even read his book in awhile............ This list is great so far and I am really enjoying the infromation. Thanks a lot. William
Guest guest
Namaste, William: *** I was wondering if anyone here knew of a good version of the Upanishads in English? *** My two cents? I'd recommend Juan Mascaro's English version. Sounds odd, I know -- a Spaniard translating Sanskrit into English: But it is very beautiful to read as poetry, and packs a great spiritual potency as scripture. It is perhaps an idiosyncratic choice. It is an old translation, and I'm sure that some members will argue against it. However, I've gotten a lot out of it, persoanlly. For a little more info, here's a link to Amazon's page on the book: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0140441638/qid=1026752083/sr=8- 2/ref=sr_8_2/104-8977058-4791912 *** As for Maatangi, I myself am a musician and would be interested possibly in devotion to this Goddess for her musical aspects.*** I don't know if you're a fan of Carnatic classical music; I am, and perhaps my favorite veena virtuosa is E. Gayatri, a one-time prodigy (now in her 40's, I think), wrote wrote in an essay, "Goddess Rajamatangi is the most important deity for vina. She has to be worshipped fervently to understand the divine nuances of vina." Gayatri should know; her art is breathtaking! Incidentally, the Rajamatangi she refers to is simply a popular South Indian form of the Mahavidya Matangi, and is considered to be identical with Meenakshi Madurai. In case you're interested, here is Gayatri's full essay: http://www.carnatica.com/sangeet/vina1.htm *** The concept of a Tantric Saraswati is great... *** Full disclosure: Matangi Devi is my one-and-only Ishtadevata. So I expect to be posting a lot of information on Her here this week, including the Saraswati issue. Perhaps you will find some of it useful. Should you have any questions, always feel free to post to the forum or e-mail me privately, as you prefer. ***This list is great so far and I am really enjoying the information.*** Glad you like it! Please visit often and feel free to contribute whenever the inspirations strikes! Aum Maatangyai Namahe
Guest guest
My $0.02: There is a four volume translation by Swami Nikhilananda of the Principal Upanishads (published by the Phoenix House, London) There is a translation of eighteen Upanishads by S. Radhakrishnan (Harper Collins). Perhaps these are more readable than Max Mueller. Cheers Mukti ("MP") Parupudi - omprem Monday, July 15, 2002 5:48 PM Re: Upanishads OM Lionserpent If you go to the website of the Divine Life Society, you will find translations and commentaries by different swamis on several of the Upanishads. Aside from commentaries and translations of the Upanishads, I find one can pick any book by the following and come away more informed, focused and enlightened: 1. Swami Rama 2. Paul Brunton 3. Yogi Ramacharaka 4. Swami Rajarshi Muni 5.
