Guest guest
I though this is rather cute : "According to the story I know, the origin of the Mahavidyas was with Parvati. She and Shiva had dwelt together for a very long time atop Kailasa, enjoying the cosmic bliss of their union. Shiva, however, was always an ascetic and mendicant, and eventually the urge hit him to leave Parvati and Kailasa and get back to his wandering ways. Parvati, like most wives, didn't want Shiva to leave. Perhaps he'd neglected to take out the trash or fix the garage door or somesuch (perhaps Nandi had been a naughty boy on the carpet and Ishvara was trying to get out of cleaning up after his best friend). In any case, Shiva was intractable, dead set on leaving, and stood up to leave his palace. Parvati grew very angry, and her anger manifested by her generating from her body 10 goddesses to block Shiva's exit and to generally keep him from straying. These were the 10 Mahavidyas (note that this seems to insinuate that they are all wrathful by nature, being rooted in a fit of divine anger). Their appearance was so terrible that this finally changed Shiva's mind, and he decided it would be best to stay home, after all. Parvati had her way.
