Namaskar to all,

I am very exited to be going to Pune, Maharashtra for three months this

coming November. I wanted to know if anyone here may have an idea regarding

the levels of Shiva and Shakti worship in Maharashta.

I know that there are Ganesha temples all over the place and I definitely

plan on visiting some of those and have the highest hopes of even doing the 8

temple pilgrimage.

I sort of eb between worshiping Kali and Shiva. Sometimes it feels a little

akward as to who my "true" highest form is if one has such a thing. My

adoration falls to Kali, Shiva, Ganesh and Skana always even though I love

all the forms of deity.

Would it be too dangerous to seek a Guru while in India? Has anyone been to

that area before? Do you think it might be good to pursue some sort of

initiation into a Shaivite order or a Kali sect of some sort?

Although my approach so far has been one of devotion in working and lots of

prayer, I do wish to pursue a more formalized form of worship and even though

I am going to India to study music it was Kali and Shiva that led me to

Indian music in the first place!

I consider the practice and study a form of devotion and always offer prayers

to Devi in her Saraswati from before beginning.

I just want to feel more connected with the Gods that I love and thought that

some guidance could be usefull. Any thoughts or opinions on such a thing?

Thanks a lot

Jai Kali Ma

William

Hi William,

Your enthusiasm about your upcoming pilgrimage is spilling over into

my computer screen. I am slightly envious!

With regards to finding a guru or initiation, I recommend erring on

the side of caution. It is my experience that for every true,

saintly, dharma-abiding teacher, there are 666 mercenaries

masquerading as real gurus. Take inspiration from buddhist sage

Milarepa's example: he observed his guru's behaviour closely for over

seven years before finally accepting him as his teacher. Take your

time.

Just my two cents.

I get your 'dilemna' about ebbing between Shiva and Kali. For

me, sometimes I find myself getting torn between Shiva and Krishna.

The wise ones say that an adherent of Sanatana Dharma would have

equal respect for all the members of the Hindu pantheon. Love all,

but reserve that special adulation and reverence for your Ishta.

"All gods are equal but one's Ishta is, of course, more equal than

others." (Bhakti logic. ;-)

As for getting "more connected" with your favorite gods, why not try

restricting your diet, for a day or two, to the foods that are

usually offered to, or associated with that particular God? For Lord

Shiva, the Lord of Yoga and Ascetic Supreme, you could try taking in

only clear water, raw leaves and vegetables, no condiments, no milk;

the kind of stuff only available in mountain ranges.

Best wishes for your Pune adventure!

Namaskar William,

In Maharashtra, there are many beautiful temples. If

possible please try and visit Trymbakeshwar which is

close to Nasik and one of the Jyotirlingas of Lord

Shiva.

Also, close to Nasik is the Saptashringi temple which

has to be one of the most beautiful Devi temples in

the world.

Wishing you a pleasant journey,

Jai Ma Kali,

Sameer

The jyotir linga would be great to see. I know in Pune City there is supposed

to be a somewhat famous Parvati temple which I plan on visiting.
